crack in engine case?

Probably depends on which bit of the engine it is. Crankcases can be
repaired with something like chemical metal IIRC.

If an engine has a crack in it, how difficult is it to have it repaired, is
    it doable / advisable???

    Paging Loz ...

    It depends, dunnit.

If the area of the crack is loadbearing (around a mounting, for
example) or the oil (or water) within it is under pressure - then
    prolly not bodgable.

Anything _can_ be fixed, just the cost varies. Removing the engine
and stripping it to reveal both sides of the crack is a pain but most
likely has to be done. Only then can you accurately assess how
serious it is and wheter it can be fixed - or just heave it off to an
    engineer to decide for you.

Specialist welders can stick _anything_ back together. The odder the
material, or more crucial or awkward the application, the more
    difficult/expensive.

    So, it depends.

    Hello.

My CB250RS engine has a 3 inch crack that runs down alongside an engine
mount. I didn't have much time or money when I fitted it, so I lashed
some 'Quiksteel'[1] into the crack and carried on using the bike. It
still leaks ever so slightly, but nowhere near as much as the huge
amount that was dripping onto the exhaust previously. I've kept an eye
on oil consumption and it's not using any significant amount. In 800 odd
miles the oil level hasn't dropped enough to require topping up.

Andy Bonwick reckons I'll be sorry if I have the crack welded, but I've
not spoken to him to find out why he's come to that conclusion. He
recommended drilling a small hole at each end of the crack and filling
it with a material called Belzona.

[1] A stick of which was £4-95 at my local motor parts shop.

    Stops the crack spreading, see?
    Top stuff...
.... but rather more expensive than that.

    Depending on your 'supplier'. *ahem*

Try the RD forum, I haven't got the new url since I sold all my stuff
off. There are always engines up for grabs there.

Why are you after a YPVS engine in particular, I prefer the non-
powervalve unit as it's easier to keep in tune and there are no
powervalves to wear out, which they all are now. It's not as quick, but
if it's going in a scooter, it won't make much difference cos the
chassis will never handle it anyway.

Could an LC engine be suspended from a spine frame by its head?

In short, not without serious beefing up of the head bolts and cases,
plus welding a mounting lug to suspend it from. They are designed to be
cradled. There is only one engine mount on the top of the motor, and
that is above the rear of the gearbox.

I'm fairly sure it's public knowledge, as a quick google search would
    reveal.

  13. Not just a crack - "broken off" is what the seller says. Just plonked
back in place for the pic, by the look of it. Quite possibly repairable
though, but there are others around that aren't busted.

Ill search about for the RD forum. As for going in a scooter, its been done
    several times :)
Fairly popular in the 80s apparantly and it squeezes under the frame of the
lambretta and panels the only giveaway being the exhausts really.

The frame would of course need some serious mods too though.

Im still considering it as a project (long term though) or my other thought
is a trike, which the more i think about the more i want :-/
