I really really wanted one of these when I was 14 and I saw it in Super
    Bike (?) magazine.

Am I alone in this - quite unlike any other Harley's of the time it
looked muscular and very, very black.

  4. Always one of the best looking Harleys, and extremely expensive to buy
    these days.

God knows why - apart from looks, I can't see what it's got going for
it. Made in the worst-ever part of AMF's Harley tenure. But yes, looks
    great.

I'm very pleased to say I never harboured any desire to own one. I
haven't liked Harley's since I was a small child, which is when my
petrolhead of a paternal Grandad told me they were shit bikes. He was a
big fan of early 60s Hondas, bless him.

  8. I too, really fancied one when they first appeared. It just looked...
good. Of course, as time passed I realised that what looked pleasing to
the eyes was, in that particular instance, just a tarted up version of
the same old piece of shit they'd been flogging for years.

I'd like to put together an XLCR lookalike, using a good reliable Jap
    lump.

I owned several of these bad boys, both '77s and '78s. My last, and
favorite was a 78 bored and stroked to around 1320 with Sputh heads and
dual mikinis. No starter, total loss ign. (you would not believe the
HP a harly generator sucks from a sportster!, charging or not!).
Had to run AV gas, even back in the late 70's, but it would outrun a
    stock XS11.
Then the CBXs made me cranky (heh, have one now)... the GS1000G made
    me throw in the towell!
I sold 2 in 1984 and got almost 10k US for the pair IIRC... harleys
DO have problems, but resale ain't one of em!
