Court case verdict on biker's death.

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Mick Whittingham, Jun 11, 2009.

  1. It is a tragedy the loss of life and the trauma to the others involved,
    but:

In the case where one biker videoed another's accident and death, the
comments about the cause seem to miss out one part. Most of the papers
show the high speed run video, how dangerous, excessive speed, etc., but
only the Mail (inadvertently) showed two relevant still clips.
(Plus a lot of comments from "Disgusted of Brighton")

Does it not look like the dark car, overtaking the light car, without
looking(?), punted the overtaking bike into the on coming camper van.

    Just a thought.
I'm not saying it's right or wrong what they were doing.

Looks like the car is indicating, I think if you're going to go
barrelling along at eek+ then expect other road users not to notice
how fast you're coming up behind them.

I wonder if they'll let my post go through which stated that Ian of
Cardiff is a sanctimonious twat who should stick to cuddling sheep.

I can't see it being added to the comments because it's moderated but
    it needed saying.

    It does actually.
Ads by google are showing helmet shops. In this case the helmet didn't
    work. Ban helmets!

It does? It could be a single brake light as the car looks too close to
    the white car in front.
    Quite.

Looks like he went to overtake and the dark coloured car in front with 1st
dibs went for it too. Darwin in action. Died instantly though, can't ask
    for more.

HFS running a camera when up to those high jinks though? dumb ****.

    170, hmm I'm jealous.

A lot of us have done similar so I'll not criticise his riding.
And you've never done anything that might be construed as being a bit
    stupid?
    I'm not.

    It does.
Still, it's really the responsibility of the rider to do the *looking*
    and avoid unnecessary risk.

    Yeah, looks that way.
That's a bit harsh. It's one thing a bike overtaking into the path of
an oncoming car/van, but the car shouldn't have tried for it. Sure,
the road is wide and he could have forced the van over to get a path
through, but that's not really the point. There wasn't an overtake on
for the car, or so the biker thought.

The most telling thing on that still is the fact the dark car was
climbing all over the light car in front, so he was obv. looking for
    the next available overtake ...

But it's easy with hindsight to look at a dodgy situation.

Similar but not quite the same is it. You would look at that situation,
where the car is close to the one in front and there is room for him to
    squeeze by, and think Hmmm.
Well there are lots of different ways of being stupid. In these times I'm
even careful about my satnav being on given it records my top speed.
    ****!

Why, I do it on the bike and in the car all the time. So many cunts are
fucking about at 30-50 on NSL one simply has to. I assume others will do
    same.

Doesn't matter whether the car driver was looking, he was indicating
and the rider should have seen that and assumed he was going to come
    straight out.

  14. Oh sh*t!
So that makes all the difference, if he was.
    Busses do that in Norwich.

So you've never come up to overtake a car which has then flicked the
indicator on & pulled out at the same time? I'm not saying that's what
happened, but it's impossible to judge without seeing the video.

The cam bike's doing 97mph in the first pic, & the distance between the
bikes doesn't change between the two pics, so matey on the front bike
was doing around the same. They were overtaking cars that were probably
doing a good 40mph less. My guess is he was about to zip past the car,
which then did the indicate & pull out thing when it was far too late
for mr biker to do anything about it.

Mostly it's been said by others, but it's always the responsibility of
the overtaking vehicle to play safe. The car may, or may not, have
looked, but I'd say that the rider clearly misjudged the situation in
not predicting a possible pull-out from the car.
Well apart from the one misjudgement I don't think they were doing
anything I haven't done myself. Certainly using the dashed middle lane
as an overtaking zone is something I often used[1] to do, both on
    bikes and in cars.

[1] They don't seem to have zones like that over here.

Except possibly to have been in the position of choice - a lot wider of
the car. There's plenty of tarmac available and if he'd used it, even
had the car pulled out the bike could have passed the car and got back
    in before the camper van.

he'd probably have been fine if he'd been going a bit faster, actually
i.e. past both cars before the overtaking car had pulled out.

  20. Unless it's me. I tend to hang back so that I have plenty of time to
    boost the overtake speed.
