  2. It sounds like they just don't like the square pixel PAL format you're
using. Standard PAL is actually 720x576

I'll know more in a couple of days as I'll be putting Encore through its
paces for an NTSC DVD project I'm working on

Because I have put the prospect of a refund to him and he has knocked
me back, offering instead a "discount on future purchases to
    compensate for the disappointment".

I don't approve of what he is doing, either. On several levels. I
have learned a lot in the last couple of days, however.

Well if you have two AVI files then its easy innit? And not theoretical at
all cause the AVI files could be of your brothers daughters hen night, see?

Anyway, given AVI files use any of the multitude of DVD authoring programs
out there (e.g. DVD Creator, Pinnacle Studio 8, Ulead DVD Moviefactory,
etc, etc) and drag both AVI files into a new project. Then give them each
a name (for the main menu page). And a little piccy if you want.

Then tell the program to create the DVD and it'll go away and re-encode the
AVI files to the suitable format (inc sound), create all the rest of the
files that a video DVD needs, and then burn the DVD. (some s/w just encodes
& makes the files and lets you use whatever burner s/w you like to do that
    bit)

Voila, one DVD playable in your average DVD player which will have a main
menu with two items in it, each one leading to one of your AVI files.

  5. But then, IIRC, Monsters Inc. has the extras on the same disc as the
main feature whereas I thought someone said Nemo is a two disc version?

It's still possible that these are just X-rentals if one assumes the
original has nothing more than the main feature on the first disc.
6.19gb would be the correct size for a full res DVD (standard 8mbps)
    that's around 90 to 100 minutes long

What were you trying to do with Nero? All I use it for is burning, other
stuff actually makes the files it burns.
Haven't got a clue. I'm just getting into this lot myself and its a steep
    learning curve.

I'm trying to grab shows off Tivo and archive them onto DVD. I was using
TyStudio and just burning the files it produced which is supposed to work,
but the actual VOB files it produced had a wierd resolution contained in
the header, which *most* DVD players ignored and played happily, but the
one I *had* (Philips 963SA) didn't, and hence wouldn't play them so I
had to delve into re-encoding them. There's something out there that will
let me hack this info in the headers but I've not tried that yet, and
don't need to now cause I've changed DVD players to an Arcam (well, I
    don't *think* I need to!)

I like DVDShrink cause you just bung a DVD in, de-select all the odd
sound tracks and the rubbish extras, whack the compression up to '9'
on the menus and extras you do want, tweak the compression on the main
movie so it fits, and hit "Go" - simple :) And its free.

Don't stop there. Tell him to blow his "discount on future purchases" out of
his ass or you'll report him to Ebay.

A refund is your right. Keep going until you get it!

Yup, in the version I have (3.12 IIRC) open the tree view in the left hand
pane to reveal the menu, main feature and extras and you can select 1 to 10
(10 being 10 second frame grabs IIRC) compression on most parts.

  14. The two avi file will play on window player but Pinnical Studio 8[1]says
it does not recognise the format. As does the other DVD creation files.
Nero recognises them but will only burn avi to svcd or vcd and each file
it too big to get on a cd (I don't know the options how to split them up
smaller). If I tell it to burn to DVD it will only accept the DVD format
    of files.
If I use Nero 6 [1] to produce an image on HD it does it in it's own
format that nothing else recognises and each time I try it the whole
process takes 2 hours to tell me it don't work.
    Tried these options, no go.
[1] Is it because these are paid for real genuine versions and not
bootlegged copies that it doesn't work.
I've got some other s/w to try yet that came with another machine plus
the new DVD burner I installed ( but having trouble with it. It says it
should down load a new version but the new version wont install.)

Thats a big problem. They are in an unknown format so the programs cannot
    import or work with them.

They could be DiVX format AVI files, I think Studio 8 doesn't know about
    these.

What you need to do first is convert them to standard AVI files.

Do a Google for some software that will 1. Inspect and tell you what
format the files are actually in and 2. convert that format to another
one that Studio 8 will import and work with.

    http://www.jmcgowan.com/aviconvert.html could help
Just use nero to burn files produced by other s/w, its cile creation stuff
    is rubbish.
Nah, i got genuine version wot is paid for and it works with AVI files.

GSpot is handy for finding out what codecs have been used. Just STFW
