    <snip>

Sound just like the discs an old mate is now importing to here from
    thailand.
Another thing to look out for is that the fakes never normally have an age
    rating.
This is so they can export them worlwide and not worry about 'local' laws.

Have a look and see what languages the subtitles are available in, that will
normally tell you whereabouts the disc originated.
All my ahem 'all region' dvd's are gold.

Some are annoying because you cant turn the subtitles off. Then again,
reading a thai persons translation can be funnier than the film!

its DVDR - with a printable surface. Pressed discs are regular silver as
they have pits and no dye.

Recordable DVDs come in all sorts of colours.

I've got red, green, blue, v light blue silver, and thats just the
recordable side. The other side can be any colour they want.

But the fact that this "film" came on 2 DVDs sounds iffy. Take the
first one, put it in your computers DVD drive and see how much data
is on the disc. If its only 4.7GB then its likely a recordable DVD
    and a pirated copy.

You can also get a windows program that will read the DVD and see
who makes the actual media, and if indeed its a recordable DVD,
    google for DVDInfo.

DVDInfo works best from a DVD recordable drive, they can read more
of the recordable info than a non recordable DVD drive.

Looking at this guys feedback it seems well iffy that with all
those sales he's only got 9 feedbacks of any sort. Also he says
that the DVD will be shipped directly from the Canadian distributor,
    were they? Who are they?

Actually, it didn't. It came on one disc - the "retail" version has
two discs - the main feature and the supplementary disc.
I'll do that in any case.
OK, I'll do that this morning.
Hmm. Don't have one of them.
I was discussing that with Elly last night. I can't email any of the
other buyers because their identities are private, but I wonder how
many of the others are pondering their position like I am, and how
many are witholding feedback or have complained to ebay and are
    awaiting the outcome.
Nope. They came from Croydon, direct ;-)

That's another thing, see. ebay state that any goods auctioned must
be physically in the possession of the seller - you can't put up for
auction something that isn't in stock, as it werte - with a few
exceptions and a proviso that the seller must state that in the
    auction layout.
The seller mentioned in his email that he only places the order with
the Canadian distributor when the auction has closed and payment has
been made - that is why 9 days elapsed before he could mail them to
me, which in itself is a breach of PayPal T&Cs.

I don't believe you have Dvdr's in those colours, in two years of handling
them i have only seen various shades of purple.

  7. Good point - the chances of a pirate using dual layer DVD-9 are pretty
    slim

    Pioneer 4x DVD-R Silver/Blue http://www.totalmediainc.com/dvdr_media_pricelist.htm

    DVD-RWs I have are green / silver/blue / greeny/blue.

The first (completely shite) lot of DVD-Rs were red, which could have been
regarded as light purple, if you're half ished and squinting a lot.

The current make I'm using use the Ritek G04 dye and are purply, but don't
think thats the only colour out there just cause you ain't seen any others.

Good call - the subtitles are in Chinese, Thai and Malay as well as
English. An odd choice for a "Region " DVD claiming to originate from
Canada. I'd expect French, for example.

We found a /few/ single disc editions on sale/auction on ebay, nowhere
else. The singleness was clearly stated in all the adverts however,
unlike the guy I got mine from.

What a lot of faffing about.

Just use DVD Shrink, then ImgTool then DVD Decrypter. Only 3 steps.

    All in theory, of course.

Exactly. It would come on either one DVD-5 and be shrunk and lower quality,
or two or more DVD-5 DVDs. Which is what it is innit? Indicating its a
    pirate copy.
Ello Dom, hows it going? :)

What a lot of faffing about. Just use DVD Shrink.
(why the need for ImgTool and DVD Decrypter? DVD Shrink does the lot in one
go. And of course then Nero or summat to write the TS-VIDEO folder)

    Theoretically of course.

Eggs-cactly, my dear Holmes. You is on the button, fraggie. I just
extracted digit (having been a little busy today) and lobbed the three
fillums in Elly's DVD drive (I'm only allowed a CD-R, see). The
results show that all three suspect films are comfortably less than 5
GB in size: 3.75, 4.06 and 4.13 to be exact.

As a comparison I checked Beauty And The Beast and Monsters Inc. (both
being known genuine Disney DVDs) and they are 6.07GB and 6.19GB
    respectively.

Bearing in mind that Finding Nemo (one of the suspects) has a DVD-9
logo on disc and box (but no hologram), I'd call that case proved.

Now, do I bother putting this to him, now I'm a couple of days older
and a stack of research wiser - or just let slip the dogs of war,
    paypalestilence, ebay and HMC&E?

  16. But how do you get two avi files of about 1 gig each onto a DVD to be
    playable on a DVD player.
    Theoretically of course.

I got sick of using Nero when it didn't do what I wanted for DVDs, and once
I've got the files with Shrink, the other two programs can run together one
after the other, so it's not a major hassle.

What I would like to make work, is to understand with some home-made DVDs why
Adobe Encore and TMPGEnc will only accept 720z576 at most, yet the PAL DVDs
I'm making have a resolution of 768x576 and both programs refuse point blank
to accept the content, even though I tell them both I'm using PAL format
source. Any ideas on where I'm going wrong please? TIA,

Aren't the top and bottom 24 lines usually where Macrovision blocks are

Why not just cut the hassle and demand a refund? Then get it from somewhere
    like Amazon where it's only £13.99 - http://tinyurl.com/yqs83

TMPGEnc should encode it AFAIK, but I find DVD-encoding programs are very
fussy about the resolutions of the video footage, and I presume it's because
of the 30-day trial version that it sticks a 'flying' logo all over the
resultant footage (I'd hate to pay the $50 registration fee and find that that
    was a 'feature')
