there is heaps of $150 helmets

they also had some more expensive helmets down around that price
due to either shitty colours or odd sizes eg xs or xxl

also some really cheap $70 ones again pretty nasty colours

but yeh they were there which is good if you need a cheap pillion lid

I did. Extensively. My comments are the direct result of
my having spent half of December shopping for a ZZR or a
    GPX.

Dunno. ZZR is $8500 + ORC, often discounted (before
negotiation) to $8K. I doubt the GPZ will be $2K cheaper,
maybe $1000 cheaper? There's not a huge difference
    between the two.

That the one up the middle of buttfuck-nowhere? Lismore
or something? Yah, that was an exception to the rule,
priced commensurate with it's location. Same bike would
be $6K or more here in Syd-en-ey.

You're right. Sheesh, buggers didn't have any of those
on the shelf in the city. Like I said, cheapest thing
was $320-ish (At MCA city, and several other stores),
so I've long regarded the $150 helmet as an urban
    myth!

Depends on the bike though dunit Nev?

1986 XT250 purchase cost $200, blue slip inspection aprox $20, rego
(inc plate fee) aprox $130, CTP greenslip $103, comprehensive
insurance $88. Helmet (which I already had) $230, DriRider jacket
$270, Blundstone boots (which I already had) $120, wet weather pants
$20. I bought it just over two years ago with a fairly worn rear
knobby tyre which I havent needed to replace yet and the front tyre
was a near new universal, so I cant give you tyre costs. But I can
tell you I average around 27km/l (75mpg in the old money) :)

And where I work, parking for motorcycles is 1/2 the car price. We
also have motorcycle only parking areas, though we can take up a car
    place if we want.

  7. I picked up a brand new pillion lid the other week for $150. CMC I
think is the brand. I've been told it is quite comfortable and not
    noisy ... too easy.

I like this "inevitably throw it down the road"
why do people think that it WILL happen not it MAY happen.
Sure we have all most likely had a drop here and there but to say that
it WILL happen is just wrong.

    You don't try hard enough.
there are heapsof shops especially the non core shops (core shops being
    ones like peter stevens etc)
the smaller shops will stock cheapies.
My first helmet cost $112 it was a bieffe.
My current helmet is a shark xrs which i got at a peter stevens sale for
    $130
The peter stevenms stocktakes are always on around september in
melbourne and REAL genuine bargains are to be had.

Yes it does... your example wasn't very typical though was it, and uncle
bully's comment was only really appropriate if the OP was to buy a cheap
commuter and not upgrade it too often - that 440km round trip each fortnight
might see the OP seeking to upgrade sooner than they expect they might.

It'd be worth going there to pick it up just for the ride back to wherever you
came from.. not to mention the $2K saving :)

Another Korean one, I've been wearing their openface lids for some years
    now.

Comfortable, quiet for an openface, I replace them every couple of
years. My pillion lid is the more expensive version with the built in
    visor.

Still free at Westfield Mall (I'm really chuffed parking there, all the
cars whizz round and round in circles trying to race someone else to a
spot, while bikes ride up to the entrance and park 10m from the main
doors!). Some of the unofficial spots in the Rainbow Palace have been
demolished (some remain). A couple of bike places in the lane at the rear
of the library. While shopping, I often park under the red bridge on the
west side, but I wouldn't stay there all day.

The ACT Government has a nice brochure, "Motorcycle Parking In Canberra"
(available from its Shopfronts), which is informative, but needs revision.

    Not at all, look here:
    http://www.transport.act.gov.au/roadtransportroadsafety/motorcyclesafety.ht

Most early BMWs, pretty much any Harley, other large cruisers, most
medium/large chookies... a plethora of non-250 options. How suitable they
might be is up to you to decide.
Is that your budget? Sure, something can be found, especially if you wait
    towards May/June...
Mixed with your commuting, you would probably best be served with a mid-
sized bike like the evergreen Suzi GS500 or Kwaka ER5. There isn't a lot of
other good options, as bikes seem to have become rather more specialised in
    the last 20 years.
In this scenario, the cost of fire/theft or comp insurance is likely to be
a high percentage of the cost of the bike. Per year. If you want to insure
it, it must be very old, or very postie.
My last helmet was $102. I'm going to buy another one soon. Damn, I can't
find a link, I wonder if I'll find the lid? (AGV Strada)
I think so... are you new to Canberra? It's often below freezing on winter
    mornings.

In winter I wear a Dri Rider Alpine jacket ($99 a few years ago) and el
cheapo synthetic ski gloves ($15 last year). And a wooly jumper.
I just wear jeans everywhere, you might have different ideas. No one can
    tell you what you need.

i am very concerned about protective
You have this arse about - *cars* are dangerous because their drivers often
    don't look.
    Yes :)
    Some bikes, yes; others, no.
Depends on the bike. Less, sometimes significantly less, if you do stuff
    yourself.
    Great!

Another option is the knitted acrylic gloves you see in the shops here by
about May (something like $5, mine are a fetching bottle green).

I have a TTH full face helmet, it cost me around $130.
It has nice blue/silver/black graphics and looks quite good and is pretty
comfortable. It should last me a few more years and by then i will well and
truely know what features i want in a helmet, and how much i am prepared to
spend on a helmet that has them.
