    Hi all,

I am about replace all the bearings in XR's swingarm and was wondering
what sort of grease i should be using? I have some castrol LMM type
grease here, it's a moly based grease, would this do?

I think this is going to be an expensive exercise... So far I havent
been able to find a bearing joint that stocks the correct bearings,
other than Honda, who want a small fortune!

    Thanks in advance,

    Ben.

make a measurement of the bearings. most are standard sizes.
try to buy them by measurement and seal/shield info.
some use bastard numbers to get you to use genuine parts. some are really
    worth it, too.
    good luck, sammmm

First, the grease you have might have moly as an additive, it certainly
isn't moly based. For swing arm bearings you want "chassis" type
grease, sticky, water repellent stuff. Or go for the special stuff they
sell for offroad bikes even if I think it's the same only with a special
    "motorcycle competition" price tag.
Normal ball bearing grease is optimised for fast spinning bearings and
is not very good protection against the unfriendly environment.
Moly won't hurt but it will not really help either.

Thanks for your advice Sammm and OH. I wondered about the LMM grease
as it didnt seem to be very tacky...

As for the bearing measurements, I'll try measuring the bearings
instead of going off their marked measurements. I found an
aftermarket kit available, but the bearings looked cheap and the
clearances seemed a bit sloppy. Funny enough they still had the
    'genuine parts' price tag attached!

    Thanks again guys,

    Regards,

    Ben

I recently found out that the original bearings were manufactured by
NTN but the funny part is, not even NTN could supply the bearings! I
ended up buying an aftermarket kit but the quality of the bearings
were no where near that of the genuine ones. I guess I probably
should have paid the extra and gone genuine, despite the gold price
    tag...

Strange, isn't it ? And it must be so much easier to make one
or two bearings for you than the 10 000 or so that Honda ordered .....

    that's what happens

a company goes somewhere and says we want 50000 of these things at this spec

doesn't mean that the company that made them will stock them as well
