Cornwall, and back, in a day.

    Not recommended.

Set off in the pre-dawn gloom, traversed Salisbury Plain through
tendrils of cold grey mist, before entering Somerset and discovering
    mistake #1.[1]

I took refuge in a Little Chef. An Olympic Breakfast[2] and a coffee
    buoyed my mood.

Undaunted, I pressed on into Devon, thence to Cornwall. By now, the
sun was out, and a dodgy roundabout trip to Polzeath, via Padstow, was
ended in the farmyard at Pentire Farm. A twenty minute trek along the
    cliff-side, and I'd found Binyon's plaque.

Laurence Binyon is the chap wot wrote "The Fallen" in 1914.

    You know:

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
    We will remember them"

    That one.

Trudging back to the Wing provided ample opportunity to reflect on the
varied consistency of sheep droppings. Small clusters, like rabbit
poo; coagulated logs, much in the style of a Picnic bar[3]; and
splattery puddles, in the manner of spilt solder.

I tell you, it's dead exotic, this rally.

From Polzeath, it was back up the A359/39/30, before turning off to
find the village pump in Winkleigh. Piece of cake.

From there, back into Exeter, then onto the lovely A303 for the
journey home. Very empty, apart from the traditional standstill at
Stonehenge. Onto the M3, then the A316, where I took advantage of the
opportunity to test the Wing's anti-gatso device as I passed
    Twickenham.[4][5][6]

From there, through the roadworks at Chiswick Bridge, and the traffic
at Knightsbridge, before a trundle along the Embankment, and home.

546 miles is a long way to go for two landmarks, but I guess the new
tyres are now scrubbed in properly.

[1] If you're using a GPS to navigate around Wessex, it's best not to
    have maps of Sussex/Surrey/Beds. loaded
    [2] Linger, mail me a snail-mail addie.
[3] Do they still make them?
    [4] Big top-box overhang.
[5] Results available in 14 days, I guess.
    [6] At a guess, about 46-47 in a 40.

    Bloody heroic, I'd call it.
<fx: furrows brow> 'lovely A303' seems to me an oxymoron. Just
curious, why do you rate it? Did it just happen to be lovely
today in comparison to the A38 and the M3?

Did it last year on midsummers day. Left at midnight, Penzance by
dawn, back home by teatime. Not tempted to do it again though.
But you had the landmarks loaded as waypoints, right? So not as bad
    as it might have been.
Didn't go for the other one which is *not* near Polzeath, as well?
    Varied diet, I guess.

Except the nearest road to Polzeath is in Padstow, on the base map.
Which led to an exact replica of the Glasson/river Lune problem of a
    month ago.
    One was enough.

Three to go: Harpham; Morley and Wickenby.

I'll be revisiting Nesscliffe next Saturday. I have a total of 7
candidates within a 2km radius of the Three Pigeons. David's getting
the lot, and I just hope one of 'em's the right one. I'm not
mentioning it to Graham, in case his head explodes.

Yes. But get orf to Australia. They're marketed the same, but a different
composition and much better for it... But they still have the appearance of
    small mammal poo...

Leaving early, and popping in on the way.

    Home to EOSM: 149 miles.
Home to EOSM via Nesscliffe: 252 miles.

I don't think he likes anyone being more pedantic than him.

I suppose I better admit that I will only be going for gold this year.
I, er, wrote off the bike that I was lent before I got a chance to go
Scotland. So with the car that *my* bike hit earlier in the month
that it is three write-offs and one car pending.

    What, grass and, er, grass?

Perhaps sheep have different 'baas' for different types of grass in
much the same way that Eskimos are supposed to have eek different
words for snow, you know: "baa" grass that's fresh and lush; "baa"
grass that's a bit dry and crunchy; "baa" grass that you just shat on
an hour ago... that sort of thing? Oh, and "Baa--aa--aa--aa--aa--aa"
for grass that an ewe was eating before being taken roughly from
    behind?

What about grass that I have puked on, after eating a dodgy lamb in
    piquant sauce the night before?
