  1. So there I was, blatting down the M1 this morning, every sense finely
honed to pick up those subliminal messages that keep us RoadGods safe
    and well...

Well, OK then, I had a stinking hangover and was clinging onto the GTS
hoping nothing too noisy would occur when suddenly I got a *huge* stink
of diesel. **** me, that made me sit up and take notice. But the road
    was dry...

Took a few seconds to realise I was passing Junction 8 and Hemel
Hempstead. Christ, but there's still a hell of a niff in the air on that
    neck of the woods.

    After the derailment at Bradford-on-Tone, Somerset - when 14 (of 18) 100t
wagons full of mixed fuel caught fire - you could still smell diesel and
    paraffin for months.

The effects of the pollution will still be there nearly 16 years on.

Don't let subsequent paragraphs get in the way of a good Fx: sits back
and awaits "WUN down" post moment, OK?

If I want to Fx: sits back and awaits "WUN down" post I bloody well will
Fx: sits back and awaits "WUN down" post, whether you like it or not!

  6. Once upon a time I was in a town (think it was Vancouver, but
the details I remember also fit Adelaide) when an oil refinery to the south
spilt a small cylinder of the gas (mercaptan?) that they use too make
gas smell distinctive -- everyone thought there was a massive gas leak!

Trust me - it can't be as bad as what I was smelling this afternoon:
Eau De Domestic Main Soil Pipe With A Hint Of Washing Machine
    Effluent.

I've messed about with me drains a little this year. I was surprised at
how clean the soil pipe was, I expected it to be shit-encrusted but it
was clean and even more surprisingly dry (this was the vertical bit that
the toilet waste pipe fitted into.)

However when the pipe to my septic tank backs up... it's not nice when
I've got to get the rods out to clear it.
