Or go to Fry's and see one for 1/2 the price compared to the Apple Store.

  4. Sure it will. The automated production equipment still have to be
maintained, visual quality checks still have to be done, someone still has
to design the production equipment as well as the IPods themselves. If
manufacturing in this country were more automated, we'd end up with more
manufacturing jobs that pay better for the simple reason that companies
could be competitive *in the US* rather than offshoring. A country with
high wages *needs* automated manufacturing to be competitive with
countries with an abundent supply of workers willing to work for 50 cents
an hour (or for free in the case of Laogai prisoners).

  5. Outsourcing was never was a big deal for me. Just pointing out that
the example you gave is actually standard practice across the board
for US companies engaged in similar.
Which means outsourcing is working as expected. As the American
economy moves onto bigger/better things, the third world takes up the
slack. End result being way more crap for the same money as industrial
    output increases.

How much do you think a cute little iPod would'a cost in the 80s?
No thanks. Too brightly lit and full of incompatible hardware! Us
bloodsucking capitalists prefer low-key lighting and cheepie crap.

Like my $1100 widescreen. Tell me, what kinda widescreen does Apple
    sell for $1100?

My Chrysler was made in Mexico. National identity is a fiction when it
comes to motor vehicles -- 2 or 4 wheeled.

  7. Automated production machinery is expensive. Depending on the size of the
production run, is labor is cheap enough, it might actually be cheaper to
pay more unskilled workers a low wage than to invest in expensive
machinery and the (more highly paid) people that maintain it. In a
country like the USA, where *all* labor is expensive in comparison to
places like China, the economics tend to be more in favor of automation.
Going back to the original subject - if you want manufacturing to stay in
this country, you'll either have to accept wage cuts for the average
worker, or increase workers' productivity via automation. Personally, I
    prefer the latter alternative.

    Cheers,
    Andrew
