Cops aren't suppose to lie... but...

  1. We must have a lot of fuckwit rednecks then. Wal Mart is the fastest
growing retailer and four out of the top ten richest people in America
have "Walton" as their last name.
Of Chinese parts. Make them chinks inhale the rubber vapors as they
    cure in the mold!
You mean the frame. The parts were made in Japan/Taiwan.

And that's coz you bought the spendy granola model. If you bought the
$300 one you'd have a made in Taiwan Trek. Welded up by <gasp> ROBOTS!

Did you know that robots have no human rights at all? When will we
wake up to the brutality of man?
So Mexicans making shit wages in polluting factories are ok?

  3. All engines will fail given a bird of sufficient size. The B-1 would fail with
a much smaller bird than spec'd.

  4. On the flip side, increasingly complicated tax codes, construction codes,
safety regulations, etc. make fewer people willing to start a business
without a large corporation behind them. Not to mention the sheeple
having it drilled into them constantly at school that taking risks is
*bad*. In some ways, the problem is *over*regulation, not lack of
    regulation.

    Cheers,
    Andrew

  5. hell, if you bought the $1700 one, its probably made in Taiwan too
(example, my Specialized Stumpjumper FSR Disk has a Taiwan frame). The
$300 one probably has a chinese frame.

Even many of the tiny american specialty frame makers have gone to China
manufacturering, I recall reading that Kestrel, a maker of very high end
carbon fiber 'triathlon' bikes has switched to asian manufacturing and is
    now a 20-ish person design-and-sales company.

If that sort of bullying had happened here, Larry, one official
complaint would have had that cop in the worst possible job at
the police station for a while until he got the idea that it was
    unacceptable behaviour.

There are many things I don't agree with about traffic law
enforcement here in New Zealand but, as an organisation, the
cops are straight up and fair here.

What brand? The frames are almost 100% made in Taiwan unless you get
    into the high end stuff.

  8. I did indeed complain to the Military Law Office and they advised to
just deal with it on grounds military personnel are quest where they go
and it's not in our best interest to point out police conduct...

I imagine word got around with every cop on the force because anytime
Officer Expert saw me traveling in the opposite direction separated by a
concrete barrier... he would just get on the radio and have his buddies
in blue pull me over waiting for him to catch up... but as officer
Expert launched into his spiel "I've got you again Kenny Roberts" they
would bolt right to their patrol cars and high tail it out of there...

I don't think they wanted to be called as a witness to any of his antics...

Seeing how strong their solidarity was made sense not to embarrass the
    whole Wichita police force...

  9. indeed, even if the frame is USA, undoubtably the components (deraileurs,
brakes, cranks, pedals, wheel bearings, headset, etc) are japanese and/or
chinese made. I guess Campagnolo is still made in Italy, but from what
I've seen the Shimano Deore and XT stuff is superior except for snob
    factor.

I haven't looked, is the mid-to-high end Shimano stuff even made in Japan
any more, or have they gone to Taiwan/China too?

I think they are an exception.
I have a Specialized. They make their own frames but do so in Taiwan.
For mountain bikes there isn't really anyone who can compete with
    Shimano for price and quality.

Ya, but "built" only means assembled. As someone in the computer industry,
I'll guarantee 99.5% of the components of that computer where made offshore
and more than likely the assembly was done by mostly non-natives residents,
just like most of the motorcycles ridden by most of the regulars in this
group. That also applies to HD riders!

You want to buy American? Buy all the aftermarket hot-rod goodies you can
    afford. ;)

  14. for some values of 'built'.

where was the chassis and power supply made?
    where was the motherboard made?
where was the video board made?
where was the disk drive made?
where was the processor chip fabricated?
where were the RAM chips made, and dimms soldered?

virtually anyone can bolt the subassemblies together with a swiss army
knife screwdriver and 'build a computer'.

  15. Really? I thought the people who made shit for me to buy were the
scientists, engineers and capitalists who invest in the technology and
resources of a modern industrialised economy.

So you mean to tell me if we set up a island where we airdrop a plane
full of blue collar guys they'd all be producing shiny Mercedes for me
    to buy within a year?

Hey that sounds like a cool Survivor series... Survivor: Mercedes
Island. First Joe Sixpack who assembles a luxury car out of coconuts
and reeds gets the million dollar prize.

  16. Anyone can slap together a bike in fifteen minutes. The big
manufacturing is turning ore into shiny little precision parts that do
    stuff on a bicycle.
So what you're saying is you're absolutely clueless about how bicycles
    are made today.

Got me a Trek a few years ago. Spent $1000 to get an American one, but
because I wanted an Al hardtail with the ultralight rims. Could care
less about origin. The only thing American on it is the Tig welded
    frame and the Rolf wheelset.

Spend less than $900 and you're getting an Asian bike. Spend less than
    $400 and you're getting a Chinese bike.

  17. So do many other PC makers. Big whoop! They can afford to do it in the
US cause those costs are negligeable over millions of units.
Really? Just got me a widescreen HP laptop for the office at a really
good price. Flipped it over, just to get a chuckle out of which
    shithole country it came from.

Much to my surprise "Product of the USA" was written underneath. I
wonder if those overpriced little iBooks are made in America....
