Curious. Why is that funny? -- des 'Half of the American people have never read a newspaper. Half never voted for President. One hopes it is the same half' (Gore Vidal (1925 - )) <http://elderofziyon.blogspot.com/>
Well, in this case, yeah... -- des '... the Palestinian leadership is not, and has never been, eager for any compromise resolution. OK. So, start with the disclaimer that no joke is funny when dissected. 1. The movie was made by Jews. Mel Brooks and his cronys have always made fun of Jewish culture. 2. The movie is set in the American West. Judaism was a non-factor. Not that there weren't Jews, but antisemitism just wasn't an issue in society. 3. The movie satirizes many prejudices, with a black sheriff, a Jewish Indian, Nazis, etc. 4. "Killing the first born" is a reference to the plague in Egypt, when the Jews wanted to get out of town, but the Pharaoh wouldn't let them go. Killing the first born in the town was a blatantly over the top strategy, a strategy that should be left to Jehovah when necessary for historically significant lessons. Does that help?
'sppose. It was '4' which confused me, for reasons you cite. Or maybe it was the fact that I generally consider Mel Brooks' stuff to be about as funny as a dose of the clap. -- des 'The power to tax, once conceded, has no limits. One person (lender) has (after my nudge), been in contact and will call me next week, to sort things out. He's even volunteered to hold up his hands on this here UKRM. The other person (bodger) has had the audacity (well, that's perception) to put the blame on me. Apparantly 4 months is too short to get the bodge repaired, contact insurance or ask me about urgency of the need to repair (sold the car after about 4 months of bodge). Seems like I need to chase for a solution on a weekly basis. I have no immediate need to out either of them, although person nr. 2 is making it quite hard not to do so. I think I'll leave it to person nr.1 to post his side on here. This whole excercise wasn't meant to embarras people, but more to see what other people would do in a similar situation. As I've stated before, not thinking this would blow up like it did, might have been a bit naive
There is an old saying that if you lend someone money and never see them again it is probably money well spent. Fraser
Taking them to court is usally a waste of time anyway because even if you win if they dont pay yuo have to trot back off to court to get the judgement enforced . As bailiffs are not allowed to enter premises unless they have already gained legal access , the debtor is laughing all the way to the bank , third party orders are only of any value if they have money in the bank easily circumvented by constantly switching banks or having several accounts with different banks , attachment of earnings may work again though going self employed gets round that one , the only real way is having the ebt secured against property but that is only of any value if they intend to sell in the near future or the debt is so high a court will allow you to sell the house from under them which is rare
Actually, for small claims, you can do it mostly on line. Very pleasant process it was too. .. As bailiffs are not allowed to enter Until their credit rating falls through the floor. Plus, the bailiffs are doing your running around for you. -- Catman MIB#14 SKoGA#6 TEAR#4 BOTAFOF#38 Apostle#21 COSOC#3 Tyger, Tyger Burning Bright (Remove rust to reply) 116 Giulietta 3.0l Sprint 1.7 GTV TS GT 3.2 V6 Triumph Sprint ST 1050: It's blue, see. #www.cuore-sportivo.co.uk
You don't have to go back to court for that, it's just forms. They'll be in serious shit if they're caught doing that. Well I've done it twice & got the money both times. First was a company who paid up straight away, second was the 'friend' mentioned earlier in the thread who's bank was ordered to pay me. I've got another one to do against some ex-tenants who did a runner owing me a grand (if I ever find out where they are), & very possibly a 4th against the current tenants, who may also have done a runner as I've not been able to get hold of them for over two weeks.
Not that they're much use doing it. My lad won an industrial tribunal (withheld wages, blah, blah) and although the court came down on his side, the **** involved wouldn't cough up and the bailiffs got nowhere fast. Eventually my lad took cuntynuts back to court and they made an "Immediate pay" order (or some such) which meant he was paid before he walked out of court. Bailiffs only seem to work if the people being "bailiffed" are scared of bailiffs or are half decent people.
Disagree. The bailiffs that did my recovery were jolly good. That figures or are half decent people. Like all things, then really. -- Catman MIB#14 SKoGA#6 TEAR#4 BOTAFOF#38 Apostle#21 COSOC#3 Tyger, Tyger Burning Bright (Remove rust to reply) 116 Giulietta 3.0l Sprint 1.7 GTV TS GT 3.2 V6 Triumph Sprint ST 1050: It's blue, see. #www.cuore-sportivo.co.uk
Krusty wibbled forthrightly: Whatever's happened between me and my mate, I couldn't do that to him. I'm fairly well off and he isn't. I can take the hit and he can't.
My 'friend' had around 7k sat in a savings account, I was around 15k in debt. I would've done things differently if the tables were turned, but I'd still expect a token gesture towards repaying it, even if that was only a quid a month.
