Strangest thing I've done due to applying this 'rule' to UKRM is letting
a completely insane Scottish bloke, who lived in Belfast, access to my
spare bed for the night before a French run.

I got stuffed by my best mate (of which he is no longer now) when I lent him
£500 to help him pay his council tax (he was desperate and told me that his
missus had threatened to leave him). Despite telling him he could pay me back
at £10-£20 per month, he never bothered.

I've never chased it up though (because in some part, like Spete, I don't like
to push friends to pay me back and £500 for me today, to be blunt, isn't a big
deal).

It still rankles me every time I think about it, as I lost touch with him,
his missus and the kids (of which I'm a godfather to one of them). That's the
bit that hurts most. The money, I don't care about. It's the fact that he was
my mate and I don't expect to be treated like that.

He's not too far from BGN and prawn as it goes.

I've been in a position where a mate's owed me a chunk of money and I
wrote it off. He was (and, pretty much, is) brassic and my income's
risen over the years to the point that, relatively speaking, the sum is
pocket money, so I figured **** it, I'd rather have him as a mate than
poison the relationship by chasing up a debt that'd put a far bigger
dent in his pocket than it'd fill in mine.

As it is, more than once I've written off a debt (or, in the case of the
nutty ex, not bothered chasing up payment for damage) rather than go
through the arse-ache of trying to get it recovered. Sometimes it just
isn't worth it. After all, it's only money.

If I was on my uppers it'd be a different story though, I'm sure.

 

That explains why they were so withdrawn when I met them. They're

Yea sounds like bollox, plus re the peer group bit, he's talking of his
own financial issues ie lack of money and as for bringing unfair
pressure, tough fucking titty.

If someone owes money and theyve been heavily hinted at like the OP has
mentioned then he's had pretty much every chance going FFS.
