What's lovely about this thread is the number of worried people (including myself) who have come lurching out of the closet.
Heh, the last few bottles were collected not that long ago. The thing is I don't always directly compensate back when I've had help/things from others, but I'd like to think that somehow it all works out in the wash. "ukrm - it's not for profit"
Haha yes. I've been on a French run at the same time as Spete, but I don't think we met there. So I'm fairly sure I haven't broken or borrowed anything. Unlike our next door neighbour, who borrowed a socket set from W about 10 years ago, and still hasn't returned it. This, despite being reminded of it when he asked us to lop the offending leaf-dropping tree. The git.
Oh, I'm not taking this lightly. If you owe me money, you would know and I would have given more than enough opportunities to make things right, as in: I would have mentioned it in conversation/FB/MSN/email/whatnot. I'm also very patient as you might tell by the fact I've waited for over 5 years now. Maybe there's some latent religious bit in my mind that you should never ask for money back, I don't know. At the time of lending, there was no problem. I wasn't short of cash and I'm always happy to lend if someone needs it. Hell, if he's paid me back, I probably wouldn't say no, if he came to me in an hour of need. What bugs me, is the lack of communication. I would've been happy with a 5 quid a month scheme. Plus I'm a bit short now ;-)
Indeed. It normally would and I know of one person in UKRM I owe quite a lot in gratitude. When oppotunity arises, I will reciprocate. The situation here is different though, if only for the lack of communication. It's fairly one-sided to say the least.
Hmmmm. Several years ago (and under a different name) I sourced overseas, bought and posted something to a stalwart of ukrm, who had *really* coveted it, at substantial effort and no small expense - and never even got so much as a fucking 'thank you'. I flounced off in disgust but, the addictive power of ukrm being what it is, returned a few months later under a succession of different names. I'd do the same again, mind, but wouldn't harbour very high expectations.
If your going the legal route do so quickly at 6 years if the debt remains unpaid and he refuses to acknowledge it a court will not give you judgement. I had a business **** me over about 15 years ago for 3K they ducked and dived and in the end i gave in . 3 years ago they sent me a payment meant for someone with a similar name to me (it had my company name on the cheque though) , i cashed it and the bastards took me to court to get it back. Although i couldnt enforce payment , if they paid me even in error i was entitled to keep the payment as although a court cant impose on a normal debt after 6 years a debt is a debt and remains payable The judge even allowed me to keep the overpayment to cover interest costs and legal expenses which is unusal on the small claims track . The look on thier faces when they realised they had lost the case was a sight for sore eyes

I was merely wondering what others in this situation (perceived f(r)iends) would do. Being a tad naive, I didn't think it would open this truck-load of worms...
FWIW (which is probably nothing), I was in that situation a few years ago, to the tune of 1400 quid. I'd lent it to a 'friend', gave the occasional reminder, but didn't push it. Then I was out of work for 7 months, & got wiped out by a divorce, so really needed it back. Said 'friend' then decided they weren't going to pay it, so I took them to court. 'Friend' claimed the money was a gift not a loan, but the recording I'd made of a conversation on their doorstep made them look like the lying **** they were, & I won without really having to try. The court then froze their bank accounts & ordered the bank to pay me my 1400 plus interest. I would still happily lend money to a friend (if I had any[1]), but if it was more than say 100 quid, I'd want a signed & witnessed IOU first. [1] Yes, yes, very funny.

But there's no guarantee he will read a thread entitled conundrum.... people dont read every thread so it needs some attention to it surely that might trigger a "oooh, that could refer to me" moment, not sure how you'd do that though........................... -- Donnie "**** the world, it's time to fight back" Lambretta Series 2 186cc "The Shitter" Lambretta LD 175cc "The Chopper" Honda CB500R "Look out, Donnie's about!"
