Well the argument surfaced in MCN the other week and the legal bloke (a bike
legal specialist) says the vehicle doesn't need to be insured anyway, so
until the new rules apply, ride what you like on your own insurance.

No it doesn't. You can ride on a CIHAGM policy even of the vehicle doesn't
have it's "own" policy. This exact question was asked of the MCN lawyers and
    their answer was totally unambiguous.

Sorry, I meant that the insurance had lapsed but the tax disc hasn't yet. I
am sure there is a V5 kicking around somewhere so I could SORN it but I
haven't been bothered to find it.

Or you could tax it like you have been doing.

So, I'm wondering... what if you wanted to emulate continental biker
friendly places and mount an old bike on top of a cafe' or hotel?

(FWIW, Over here, a SORN is called a "planned nonoperational" and it's
a one-time nominal fee. They keep sending registration paperwork every
year, but you don't have to do anything with it unless you want to put
the bike on the road again. I guess sometimes our bureaucracy ain't
    that bad.)

    +1 - well, it's assumed he/she was uninsured.

there's some worrying clauses on that link

How does this affect a vehicle used only in the summer?

"If you have a vehicle that is not insured, but which is still taxed
you could face a penalty. This includes motor caravans, motorbikes and
classic cars – all vehicles that people sometimes leave uninsured for
    part of the year."

"What will happen if your vehicle doesn't have insurance"
"If a vehicle does not have insurance, the registered keeper of it
    could:

    * receive a fixed penalty of £100
    * have their vehicle wheel-clamped, impounded, or destroyed
    * face a court prosecution, with a possible maximum penalty of
    £1000

An Insurance Advisory Letter (IAL) will be sent to inform the
registered keeper of a vehicle that appears to have no insurance. It
advises the keeper what actions to take to avoid receiving a Fixed
    Penalty Notice"

Fucks sake. This really blows. Worse than the SORN bollocks.

    Paul.

Fuckall to do with me, that lot.

How do you make a Health and Safety connection - apart from it being
    gobbledegook, of course?
