In this instance, what's the difference? In what way are those
"running it" making it a "bad thing"?
I'll accept criticism from many quarters, but I will not accept being
called a thick **** by you.

Whilst you may be right about this.

You are well past the target here.

Don't let his pragmatic approach fool you, he is just as jumped up about
His Mission as the rest of them. One of the reasons why he is good at
    his job imo.

  4. What planet are you on. He's got an ego so large you could paint a
large bridge with it and still have some left over. He doesn't drive,
doesn't ride, fucks everyone over big time, screws with the police,
terrorism, parking and almost anything else he can get away with not to
mention feathering his own nest like all the other politicians and you
have the cahonies to say he's a good chap. Your as mad as he is.

    Verdigris barfed:
Carlisle Bus company had a problem with very few passengers.

They decided they'd rescue things by upping charges. And again after
    the first time didn't work.

A few months later they went bust.

Next company along did the same thing. (25 ish years ago IIRC)

Easy Cinema has upped its charges cause it wasn't making enough and not
getting enough bums on seats. I wonder how long that will last.

Don't know why companies frequently think "uhoh, few customers,
no/little profit, lets make those that we do have pay more, ergo more
money" will actually work long term, but they do?

From what I can see, this is either lazy thinking or ignorance; perhaps
    both.

  9. Well if we imagine that we have staggered our way onto A Level Economics
or even possibly degree level then we would know that the normal laws of
economics don't fully apply in this case. The congestion charge seeks to
raise the cost of transport for those vehicles within scope of the
charge. However the demand for transport is a derived demand - i.e.
people don't travel for their own sake they do it to achieve some other
purpose like visiting a client, going to the shops, getting to work etc.

Therefore Verdigris is not wrong when he says that there will be people
who will pay the charge whatever it is simply because they have to in
order whatever activity it is they need to do when they arrive at their
destination. This is why there are typically not huge losses of
passengers when train fares go up for London commuters - they have to
get to work and the alternatives are relatively less convenient or more
    expensive.

While the primary objective of the congestion charge is reducing
congestion and it has been successful in that regard it is also a
hypothecated source of revenue (net of operating costs). Therefore
increasing the charge has the potential to raise more money for public
transport from the core group of those who will always pay the charge.
There is also a political aspect to this which is that a higher charge
in the centre provides more a case for the Western extension of the
zone. If the charge remains at £5 it will be impossible to raise it if
the Western extension goes ahead. Make it £8 and you remove the
political problems of trying to raise it later within a much bigger
zone. Well that's my theory anyway.

  10. He's gay as well? Or just a newt-fancier?

No, like you, I rermember him from last time around, and I don't think
that sort of leopard changes its spots. He is astonishingly adept at
using the media, and oddly, I do think he cares a lot for London, but I
think he cares for himself rather more.

TFL have responded to me with the following:

    A TfL spokesperson said:

"Both motorcycles and scooters are exempt from the congestion charge as they
do not cause congestion. The Mayor wishes to make it crystal clear that he
has absolutely no intention whatsoever of making scooters and motorcycles
pay the congestion charge. Motorbikes and scooters will not be charged.

"Despite the increase in numbers of motorbikes and scooters in the zone,
there continues to be a decline in the number of accidents involving powered
two-wheelers since the introduction of the scheme."

So good news it seems for now then!

Can we suspend the Fatwah on this one?
    Indeed?
