  1. Everybody just shrugged and assumed it was gunfire from down the block
    somewhere.

  2. True; but if it's kept as a prestige aircraft, the upkeep would just
have to be shouldered by the Govt and the spares receipts buried in an
unmarked MoD drawer. T'wouldn't be the first time the taxpayer has
shelled out untold amounts for unidentifiable projects.

Getting rid of one doesn't necessarily lead to the selection of the
    other.

C.O.Jones was seen penning the following ode to ... whatever:
And they won't in the future either, while passenger air travel means
transporting people in conditions that would have the RSPCA breathing
down your neck if you were transporting sheep.

  8. Too right. It's just amazing to think that Concorde was so old - it
still looked like the most modern aircraftin the sky.

Credit where credit's due, though: let's not forget that an incredible
amount of early high-speed aircraft R&D was done by you Boxheads. You
guys were *decades* ahead of the rest of the world in 1944/45.

I know this was posted here recently, but:

    www.luft46.com

Especially, click on the "Luft Art" button on the left hand side of thje
main page for some fabulous artists' impressions of aircraft real, under
    development and projected.

    I mean, look at

    http://www.luft46.com/jgart/jg179-6.jpg

And tell me that this machine would not look out of place in the 21st
    century.

I meant when it was built it didn't advance technology much! B-36,
B-47 had done most of it already ...

How come BA can't use the fleet to offer corporate freebies to
Virgin's large trans-atlantic customers to swing accounts to BA?

Indeed. A valuable lesson has to be the House of Lords. Reform was
needed, but reform without a fully fledged and viable strategy for
what is to replace it ends up with the unsatisfactory mess we
    currently have.

FWIW, I am a reluctant monarchist. I don't believe that monarchy has
any real place in a moden democracy, however as a putative figurehead,
    I think there is value.

Heh. I had it put to me by an aircraft engineer that old stuff like
Canberras and B52s are "like a tin of Heinz Baked beans.. It looks
just like the tin you had your dinner from when you were at school,
but its got different beans in it."

    Thinks

    That's rubbish, innit?

    Good question, don't know.

Do Virgin have a large number of transatlantic corporate clients? I
thought (quite possibly incorrectly) that they were mainly a 'consumer'
    airline.

    Precisely.
