I wasn't talking about Blair, I was talking about the PM.

It would be better just for Head Of State.

I think you rather missed the point! Now we don't have a cold war to
suck up billions [1] surely we should be advancing even faster? We
could be putting the money into all sorts of things, from a proper
Space programme to curing diseases. Instead the world is now
"Bigger", you can only fly somewhere on a 30 year old Jumbo, and lots
of viruses and bacteria are becoming resistant to medical treatment.

[1] For evey SR-71, which was actually "Skunk Works" so rather cheap
anyway, there were several hundred F-15, B-52 etc. which did little to
    advance technology.

Actually I seem to recall that it needed £40 million spending on it on
unanticipated maintenance/upgrades. I'll have a dig around and see if
I can find out what it was exactly ...

Jealous bastards!! I remember all the furore of the yanks not wanting to let
it land in NYC, I thought back then it was down to jealousy and I've seen
    nothing to change my mind.

Why? It's a matter for BA and their shareholders.

If I was a BA shareholder there's no fucking way I'd want them to sell
    to my competition.

I dunno, if it's such a terrible loss maker then as a BA shareholder
I'd want them to do all in their power to flog it to Branson for as
    much money as possible.

ISTR Revell models making a kit of the B2 in the seventies.[1]

All denied officially, of course, "no such aircraft", and all that
nonsense, then, when the real thing emerged, it transpired that the
kit *was* a faithful 1/72 scale replica.

[1] It must have been the 70s, as I was at school. I'm not sure what
the aircraft was described as, but iinm, "stealth" featured somewhere.

No. It was sold to BA. It's gone, we have no say in it anymore.

The 124 is big enough. Big enough to get a Nimrod in, anyway.

That was airborne halfway down the runway, at what seemed like walking
    pace.

Bit much expecting a 50 year old bomber to "advance technology". Not
that there is likely to be much of the originals remaining.

  14. but surely if it's a commercial disaster area it's the perfect strategy
for destroying Virgin Atlantic? No need for a dirty tricks campaign
    then.

Richard Branson was on breakfast news this morning and was asked if
wanting to buy Concorde was just another publicity stunt. He replied
that he didn't need to go to the lengths of buying Concorde just to
generate publicity - he could do that all by himself. Nearly got his
knickers in a twist when they sneaked in the question about Network Rail
taking all the maintenance staff back "in house".

He doesn't need to use the fleet much, just own it. Use it for
'corporate freebies' to BAs large trans-atlantic customers to try to
swing the accounts to Virgin etc.
He'll come a cropper one day. Mark my words.

  16. There was something about this on the BBC website the other day. One of
the old designers said that the preliminary plans for Concorde Mark Two
    were still in existence.

Some of the next generation chose to stay in engineerng and work on
projects which whilst not as sexy are more economically viable.
Others suitably qualified chose to move on and earn a living in
    better paid occupations.

Although I suspect that the generation to come will earn a good living
in engineering given the current skills shortage. Supply and demand
    and all that.

I think that you will find that all the major aircraft manufacturers
have considered (and continue to consider) supersonic aircraft. It's
just that the business cases don't stack up to take them any further
    at present.

  20. Preferably two. They could be made to pay for themselves when not on
official duties by doing charter work. There's still plenty of folk
willing to fork out an affordable amount of dosh simply to fly around
the Bay of Biscay or some other European destination.
