Well that was sort of the point, however badly expressed. they're
also looking at a psossible engine refit for the fleet.

No, I disagree. Many do see them as a point of reference. Not
    everybody, obviously.

I tend towards the "devil you know" theory here. Certainly than most
    of the alternatives..

Dunno, I'd say the decals may cause an argument. ;-)

I know, the original point that was lost way way back at the start of
the thread was that I said something like "we don't push boundaries
like with the SR-71" and someone came back to say that they were glad
we weren't wasting money on the Cold War. I then tried to point out
that the vast majority of the money spent on the Cold War was on stuff
like the B-52, which didn't advance technology at all, so arguably now
we should be advancing even faster. But we're not.

Phew. Glad I got that off my chest ;o)

The Turbofan update? I thought they decided against that? At one
point RR were in the running, which is probably what scuppered it!

I dunno, they do all that stuff with Executive Lounge, Limos and

  10. Good grief.
Half-century old warhorses fitted with the results of a night's
    skipraiding.

Why the 386? Is it supposedly tough and hardened, all that sort of
thing? I assume these are military versions and not old stock found on
    ebay.

Well, the MIL-STD-1553 Avionics bus was specified in the 70s - so 386s
are pretty dang up to date!
Ha. That's probably what the guy selling the stuff to the military
*said* they were, and what they *actually* are, neatly joined in one
    sentence :)

More like a case of the 386 being a very well known about CPU... bugs and
    all.

Very vague recollection: before the B2 was revealed to the public,
somebody in the US published an advert for something, which involved a
supposed picture of the "new stealth bomber". They had a look at a few
Popular Science-type mags, then made a mock-up out of plywood and the
cabin of a Honda Civic, sprayed it matt black and photographed it. The
result was apparently convincing enough, and also enough like the real
thing, to provoke a (dead give-away) visit from the CIA...

He might have been saying that they're just straight cylindrical tubes,
churned out by the yard. A bit of streamlining but no real
aerodynamics, eg area-ruling or something sleek and non-uniform like the
    Piaggio Avanti.

....and there'd be a few around to rob for spares. Plus, if we kept one
for Brenda, the French would find that national prestige demanded that
they have one for their president.
