Worth buying a copy of Windows 2000 or a Linux and starting form scratch. Forget IE and use something like Mozilla, Firebird or Opera. BIOS amy need a reflash from the m/b manufacturer web site. Linux? You are joking - Paul has said he isn't terribly confident with computers - trying to setup and maintain a linux installation will be stupid - especially if all he wants to do is use newsgroups and browse the occasional website. Again, I disagree - for your average home user IE is perfect - there is simply no reason to change unless it's broken, which it shouldn't be. And when that goes wrong (which, I admit, is a lot rarer then in previous years but still not something to 'just do for the hell of it') ?
The offer is noted - let me see if I get a reply from the company administrators re the warranty. I don't want to break the warranty terms before I know if there is a chance of a free repair. I'll let you know if / when I need the help.
Nothing to do with the endless pop ups and ads, then........ Well, yes, a Bios re-flash can go wrong, but if its not working...... It Donald Ducked ATM, so some answers might help......... -- Steve Uzochukwu, Avian Amour and Windtech Quarx. http://homepages.which.net/~steveu/index.htm The UKRM FAQ: http://www.windfalls.net/ukrm/ukrmfaq1.html The rec.aviation.hang-gliding FAQ: http://cougar.stanford.edu:7878/HGfaq.html This Signature is two lines too long for Demon.local at this point ***************************************************************
Top bait and no mistake. However: XP - not working? Hardware - not working? Simply put, it may be an issue with OS and hardware compatibility or a genuine hardware fault. Loading another OS will eliminate one or the other. If it works fine with the other OS, bingo. If not, look to more ways of testing hardware but substitution. The last time you may have received what you regarded as terrible advice on here was probably from Sir Tony. HTH. The *best* advice would be to either get it fixed under guarantee or to take it to a local PC mender. But that's not much help, AFAICT. Have you ever used, Mozilla, Opera or Firebird? Later.
When a company goes down the tubes, 99.99% of the time it's because they owe *big-style* to the IR or the vatman (C&E). These are "preferred creditors" and will be paid in full before any other poor sucker gets a look in. So, don't hold your breath.
Yes I'm well aware of that. Oh I'm not. I tracked down an article today in a computing magazine that says that the company had huge debts and that there was very little hope for those of who have warranty issues. There was some talk of companies being willing to purchase the assets of the defunct business - no mention of the associated liabilities though. The more bizarre aspect is that the company website is still operative and advertising goods for sale and some of the March editions of magazines still have full adverts (I do realise there are deadlines for placing adverts so the space may have been purchased a long time ago).
[computer woes and veracity of advice] it is decidedly temperamental. Internet Explorer closes down of its own volition. The machine reboots for no reason. It rarely achieves a stable boot up into XP without checking of discs, resetting files, crashing and then reloading. The memory dumps to disc at will indicating problems and recommending changes to the BIOS settings re caching and shadowing. But I have a mirror disc facility and under previous instruction from Multivision have fully reverted the machine to factory settings. I had a modicum of stability but still the machine switched itself off at will. But as dwb has correctly said I am very much a novice. I only undertake relatively simple computing tasks. Microsoft Office plus Internet Explorer, Agent and Mailwasher are about all I ever use. I certainly cannot begin to contemplate using Linux. I have no real interest in fishing round trying out alternative software for the sake of it. I only choose new or additional software if I have a specific need for it. I'm just one of those very boring users who expects to switch a computer on and then for it to function perfectly and for me to achieve the output I require with no glitches, errors or spectacular crashes. I also completely fail to see why I need to become the equivalent of a computer technician in order to own and use one. I don't need to be a television repair man to watch a telly, a comms engineer to use a phone or a corgi registered gas man to use a gas cooker. Why is a PC any different? Agreed - hence the original question in the light of the supplier going bust. Thanks for making the effort to post a suggestion though.
That is trivial to fix. (Not that I use IE you understand) It is almost certainly working fine. What users *say* is not often an accurate reflection of the situation. I use Opera on a daily basis. I never slagged it, or the others off as a poor product - they are now. I said that IE is perfect for what most people want to do. Are you going to disagree with that, or are you going to say you're just 'trolling' ?
Used to love it, and when you get used to tabbed browsing, there is no substitute Then it got bloated and I moved to Firebird (which IMHO knocks Mozilla into a cocked hat) -- Catman MIB#14 SKoGA#6 TEAR#4 BOTAFOF#38 Apostle#21 Tyger, Tyger Burning Bright (Remove rust to reply) Alfa 116 Giulietta 3.0l (Really) Sprint 1.7 Triumph Speed Triple: Black with extra black bits www.cuore-sportivo.co.uk
Funnily enough, I've gone back to Opera from Firebird. It only cost £9 to upgrade from 6 to 7 which gave me multiple user accounts. I found Firebird rather random in its support/how it worked with Java and mpeg, wmv et al. It also kept crashing when using the bookmark search. One of the features I missed most from Opera. Opera's search features are better than the Google bar on FB. As has been said IE is not evil and perfectly usable. If it were to take the tabbed browsing line a la Opera (but not FB's version) it would be the death of Opera. ATM its one of those pieces of software I'm happy to pay for.
