Yes, in the sequel, Newt (the little girl), says to Ripley 'it's too
    late, they're here'.

    :p

Not exactly, the problem I had was taking a feed from my turntable to
the iMac, and the Hi-Fi wasn't earthed [1]. It caused an earth-loop
fault, and made a horrid noise on the input to the Mac. Once I used a
correctly earthed block all was fine again.

It had nothing to do with the computer at all.

    [1] At all! [2]
[2] I didn't know this until I got this problem.

The linspire CD played silly buggers...

Got to the "install or run from CD screen" and when I selected CD... it
    gave a read error.

I'll burn another cd tomorrow - but I'm downloading ubuntu, ATM.... seems
    to have more support available......

IIRC, there's various styles of linux ranging from geek to idiot.

Maybe the version you tried isn't commie-proof? ;-)

I'm not a geek and am not an idiot regarding computers. More capable
than most but not a 'hobbyist' any more.

Linux whilst I've played with it a few times is of little interest to
    me.

I've not had a virus problem. I can afford MS OSs (and the ones I have
are licensed) and I've bought the applications.

I can't see any reason to go to Linux, especially when I'd need it to
run wine so I could load my MS Money file (unless things have moved on.)

I'm sure Linux is fine and dandy but I want something that works out of
the box without any fiddling and which will run my apps.

I know - I'm busy with this 'work' stuff and can't read UKRM except in
short bursts. What a bummer eh? Fancy making me work!
