About 5 weeks ago, I started having audio problems, playing back movies,
    or audio files.

I'm getting a hissing during playback, whenever I use any software, other
    than Windoze Meeja player.

I've checked the connections inside the box, removed and re installed the
relevant software, even tried new stuff.

I normally use Winamp and VLC, but I've tried sonique, too... still
    hissing.

WMP is totally clear - I'm really stuck, now.

    I'm running XP home 1GB ram, onboard sound, 2 x 40GB and 1 x 250GB drives

Anyone shed any light on this prob....?

    TIA

    Intake leak, check your hoses.

You may also consider reinstalling your audio card.
