  1. I might be able to find out who the registered keeper is if you like?

    Interesting...

Looked-up my Alfa Romeo "HGT 331N" and it came back with the correct
    details, including

Date of First Registration 22 01 1975 - date imported from
Switerland (where it had been reg since '68)
Date of Last V5 Issue 15 07 2001 - when we moved house
Year of Manufacture 1968 - correct

but it gives the Vehicle Excise Duty Rate for vehicle
    as 6 Months Rate £90.75
    12 Months Rate £165.00

surely as a 1968 vehicle it's "tax exempt".

Note that it wasn't given an "age related" number when it was registered in
'75 as it should have been given a "J" suffix. It's actually illegal now to
put a plate on a vehicle (inc. cherished plates) that indicate it's younger
    that it really is.

I've had the car since '79 and it's been in the back of the garage since
2002 waiting for me to track down a replacement set of seals for the rear
calipers - yes discs all round on a '68 car, plus DOHC all-alloy engine,
gearbox and LSD housing - very advanced for it's age.

Have you tried Highwood Alfa in Swansea? - they're specialists in shite
    old Alfas.

Have you actually taxed it in the last 9 years? It's not automatically
changed especially as the registration isn't age related.

Just tried my old 124 Spider, FYP 876V and it can't pull up anything.

Hope it's not been scrapped, it was far too good for that, even if it
    did require 'some bodywork'.

Not yet, though I've seen their ads in the Classic comics.

First thing I have to work-out if the brakes are Dunlop or ATE; according to
the parts book they could be either.
Last time I needed pads was about 15 years ago when Euro Car Spares used to
have an outlet in Laindon and they just matched the old ones.

Trouble is, with my duff neck and wrist (from an RTA two years ago) I can't
get down to do it, so it'll have to wait.

err no. But it's not been on the road - honest.
It's also not had a SORN request, so I didn't...
So do you reckon they'ed make it tax exempt if I fixed and MOT'd it?

How is he going to tax it? No log book, no reminder, no tax disc.

I realise its flawed but less than before and when the databases (tax,
licence and logbook) start really talking to each other then it'll become
more and more difficult to accidentally avoid giving the correct details.

In that case, I'm sure I could find room for it here. I mean, it's not
worth a lot, is it, so you may as well let it go cheap to someone who'll
    appreciate it ;-)

Not a problem, doesn't even need an MOT, just phone them up or go in and
ask them to change the taxation class from PLG to Historic. You need
some recognised proof of date of manufacture but as their own records
show that to be 1968 I can't see it being necessary.

We had an '82 AlfaSud 1.5 Ti, from nearly new - ex-demo.

Within a year the bonnet, tailgate and petrol flap had rusted through.

The nearest Alfa dealer tried to repair under warranty but also being a
Scimitar (plastic car) dealer, they seemed to think it was sufficient to
    just spray over the rust!.

In the end I made Alfa GB an offer "Give me all the parts, in bare primer,
I'll release you from any further liability and get a real body-shop to do
the work." - They agreed a little *too quickly*.

It was a great little car and with Koni rear shocks and low-profile tyres it
handled like a go kart ;-)

It even managed to maintain it's power/weight ratio for years. As the
engine grew tired, so more of the bodywork fell off...

In contrast the only rust on my '68 1750 GT Veloce is on the panel in front
of the rad, under the bonnet, but I did have a new boot floor (seal went)
and sill covers fitted when it was re-sprayed in '87.

Our last house was in a street with no No.13, as is often the case.

It's amazing the number of times new posties would appear with official
    looking mail for "No.13"...

....and it's so palpably crap. You get a noisy bike coming at you, and it's
    like

    mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmMMMMMMMM*WOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGHH*
    ^
    you

....in other words, you don't hear that much until it goes past you. Even
less if you've got the stereo turned up.

And only the bang if you pull out...

He slips through the cheap net that has been employed. A greater police
presence rather than automated systems would be preferable but bangs per
buck the proposed system is pretty efficient.

It stops the casual skip a month types and gives the dailymailistas that
comfortable feeling other people aren't getting away with it.

There'll always be the chancers just under this system there will be
    less. Probably.
