Off topic but what do you think of the Tiguan ?

    JL
(no not planning on buying one - but I know someone who is - if I buy a
4wd it'll be something obscene like the V10 Toerag )

I was very pleasantly surprised by the Tiguan and I was expecting to be
    hugely underwhelmed to be honest!

It drives much much better onroad than any real 4x4 (but you'd expect
that given it's soft roader heritage).

It also drives better onroad than the current Rav4, the Current CRV and
the current Forrester (which is nice but not totally unexpected).

It's got a better 4x4 system with better power transfer to the rear axle
and better approach and departure angles than the Rav4 and the CRV and
it's got better axle articulation than the Forrester.

The turbo-diesel has averaged 7 litres/100kms over the last 6000kms
(bloody good for a vehicle that weighs about 1650kg) and offers pretty
good (if not startling) performance as well.

IMO it's the current pick of the small-medium off roaders.

    *hints*

The leather seat pack is needed or it looks a bit downmarket (comes with
heated seats), thats $4000 but worth it.

The off road technology option is needed if you want it to work better
off road than the other soft roaders, umm about $1300 from memory but
worth it even if you only use it for trips to the snow fields.

The fog lamps are cheap and the car looks cheap without them so tick
    that box.

We wasted money on the iPod kit which is useless, just use the aux input
that's standard (and which works better).

The standard mag wheel/tyre size combo offers easily the best ride and
is the only pack suitable for light off roading, the next size up in
mags looks nicer and makes the Tiguan steer a bit tighter (yes you can
tell the difference). The biggest available optional mags make it harsh
(avoid unless you're a style queen).

    Bad points?

Well, there is 2 fifths of bugger all luggage space if you've got 2
adults in the back row of seats which means a roof top luggage pod (or a
bigger car) if you make a habit of 4 adults. Don't get me wrong,
there's plenty of room for the people... just not their luggage.

The tow rating is 2 tonne (which is good) but the max downforce is only
75 kg (which restricts what types of trailers you can tow).

That's about all I can think of at the moment...

Smee. How about taking that to an English teacher to get it marked.
Poor grammar. Incorrect use of words. Bad sentence structure. Use of
words derived from languages other than English (oh the irony).
Included phrases from a non-existant dialect of English invented by an
Indian. Probably more. A fail, I say.

Ivor. Just ignore the baby's crying. For some reason after thousands
of years of evolution he would like to see the language stop dead in
it's tracks. Apparently we already have enough words and meanings for
Smee and he doesn't have room for any more, nor any tolerance for
different dialects or variable spellings. Just mention a word he
doesn't like and you'll get this diatribe all over again. He never tires.

Aside from possibly some hybrids, I struggle to think of a car of any
description manufactured in the past decade which would not be capable
    of towing a motorcycle trailer.

Unless of course one loaded up the motorcycle trailer with a couple of
    Gold Wings :)

Well that depends on whether "motorcycle trailer" means "trailer for
towing by a motorcycle" or "trailer for towing a motorcycle on"

In the former case I don't think you even need to exclude hybrids -
even an 800cc smart or suzuki swift should be able to tow something
designed to be towed by a bike...

The smallest cub camper trailer is (allegedy) designed to be towed by
bikes but is of a weight that actually rules out some smaller cars
    towing it (seriously).

It's supposed to be fine behind Gold Wings and similar though...
