On a Pan the mirrors are the widest point ,so judging the gap is easy.

Not only are you incapable of spelling, you also seem to have a problem
    in reading.

  5. It's an immutable Usenet law that when someone criticises someone for
their spelling, that someone manages to screw up in so doing :)))

I'd agree with you, if the owner can cope with the tedium. Actually,
talking of tedium, what about a TDM850 or 900?

  7. Whilst this may be true for pans (and also K series Beemers)
unfortunately the 'edge' of cars isn't perfectly vertical so the bars
may fit through but the panniers won't.

Well, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. It's how I recently got
stuck between a bus and a car when filtering near Paddington.
Fortunately no one either noticed or cared and once the lights turned
    green the situation resolved itself.

  8. Too be honest I'd rather make the odd spelling mistake than be
    completely ignorant.

Still, it's nice to see that things haven't changed during my
    sabbatical.

The FOAD panniers I had on my VFR were a bit tricky in traffic.

As I found when I clipped the rear corner of a van.

Van driver wasn't happy, but there wasn't any damage.

I obviously protested my innocence, claiming I'd have been on my arse if
I had actually hit his van...

So if you specify a cheap(er) lid, then you agree with me, closer to a
monkey will see you sorted for kit, rather than a grand .. ?

I have decent kit, and in total if you add up all the Gore-Tex
jackets, leather jackets, trousers, gloves and boots I have, it will
of course add up to well over a grand. (my Arai alone cost the thick
end of £300 when I bought it)

My point is, to get a sturdy set of kit that will be safe and
waterproof, you don't need to spend anywhere near that sum.

IMHO it's usually the longevity of the kit that's the issue. I used to
buy quite a lot of mid-priced HG kit so I reckon I did kit myself out
for about 500 but I had to replace pretty much all of it bar the helmet
    every year.

ISTR there's something in Bike or RiDE this month about an all-in-one
winter 'romper suit'. I commuted for around 50k miles in a Heinz Gerkin
version a decade ago - you could wear work clothes underneath, so
changing when you got to work took just a couple of minutes.

They were on my F650 by quite a margin.

I've just popped out to the garage and the width across the panniers on
the R11550 is about 10cm more than bars

I didn't measure the cylinder heads. It wasn't about cylinder heads.

    OK, I'll go outside again.

The bars are wider than the cylinders. The panniers are wider than the
bars. The dishwasher still stinks of oil and my arse is still sore.

Obviously you haven't looked at a v-strom with the standard suzuki panniers
    fitted.

Yea, that's probably a good thing though, I throw away gloves, jackets
and helmets when they start getting (too) manky. Not sure i'd want to
be anywhere near 3 year old gloves that had been worn regularly ;-)

I'd agree that gloves are pretty much consumables, the trouble starts
when you have to throw away the boots and jackets after less than a
year's worth of use because they started to leak.
