Does anyone out there have any recommendations for web sites that
allow a group of people to upload a bunch of photos that they can then
    share?

I've used Yahoo Groups in the past, which has such a feature, but it's
much more orientated towards group email distribution.

Not sure if it's quite what you want but lots of the online photo
printing shops (I use www.snapfish.co.uk) allow you to upload piccies
with a view to printing them.
Of course you don't have to print them, but you can let people view them.

    them.

photobox.co.uk do the same thing. You have the option to make each
album private, shared by your invitation only or public to everyone.

It depends on what you mean by a "group of people". If they're a
trustworthy bunch, you can setup a photobucket.com account & give the
password to everyone you want to allow to upload to it.

If they're not trustworthy, or you want to allow anyone upload access,
I think you're stuck with either Yahoo Groups, MSN Groups or
    smartgroups.com (& probably a bunch of others I don't know about).

The problem with Yahoo Groups is the 'full size' version of photos can
only be seen by moderators & the person who uploaded it. All other
members can only see the 'screen size' version, which is only something
    like 300 pixels wide.

That sounds ok - it's just the group who were on the Russia trip - we
all want to be able to see each other's photos.
