    Patrick Evans emerged from their own little world to say
    You'd need a robust vehicle to do 90 in the 20 limits near me. The speed
    bumps are quite chunky.

    They make no difference to the GS though - as I noticed when returning from
    the MOT place a little while ago. They shouldn't make the roads such fun to
    ride on what with the speed bumps, bollards & chicanes. Sort of big boys
    obstacle course.

    Like Upper Thames Street, since last week.

    Including Specs cameras to calculate your average speed over a
    distance of 250m.

    In both directions.

    That's money well spent, then.

    To be brutally fair to them, the lanes have been narrowed past a
    construction site, but it still seems like overkill.

    There are traffic light junctions at each end *and* a pedestrian
    controlled crossing in the middle. It's almost impossible to reach
    20mph some mornings.

    Speed cameras to enforce roadworks 20mph zone

    From Monday 29 November construction works for Walbrook Wharf, by the
    Corporation of London (CoL) on Upper Thames Street, between London
    Bridge and Southwark Bridge, will have temporary speed cameras
    enforcing a 20mph zone.

    During the 18 months of roadworks, the London Safety Camera
    Partnership (LSCP) will operate four pairs of digital cameras in the
    temporary 20mph zone. These cameras will enforce the lower speed limit
    in order to protect vulnerable road users on the temporary road layout
    and construction site workers.

    Tom Duckham, Project Manager, LSCP, said: "We want to encourage
    drivers and riders to keep within the reduced speed limit for the
    safety of all road users on that busy stretch of road. Message signs
    will alert drivers if they travel over the speed limit so they can
    reduce their speed before reaching the zone. Our primary aim is reduce
    speed related collisions and to protect vulnerable road users."

    Peter Hendy, TfL’s Managing Director, Surface Transport, said: "In
    2003, pedestrians and cyclists accounted for over a quarter of all
    casualties on London's roads. As Upper Thames Street is exposed to
    high volumes of both groups, we must ensure their safety is paramount.
    Research proves that a 1mph reduction in average speed results in a
    reduction of 6% in the number of collisions, and we will endeavour to
    mitigate collisions at this site over the next 18 months".

    Sergeant Alan Rickwood, Traffic Management, City of London Police,
    said: "The cameras will enforce speeds in both directions and the
    scheme will be supported by variable message signs, to warn drivers in
    advance of their speed so they have the opportunity to slow down."

    well, I don't think I have, though when I had the R30, and worked at
    the BL, I did pull a few wheelies off the traffic calming humps in
    Somers Town, which is a 20mph limit.
    I've done well over 100 in a 30, mind.

  12. Well, 20 mph and 90 mph is 32 km/h and 144 km/h respectively ... and I have
    difficulty imagining riding at 144 km/h in a 32 km/h zone (the latter are
    _very_ rare over here, anyway).

    The bike could conceivably do it, a better rider could no doubt pull it
    off, but I'd be too busy crapping myself in case I tossed the BMW down the
    road or (worse) killed someone who stepped out in front of me.

    The most I've done is probably around 90 km/h (56 mph) on the Seine
    Expressways, which are limited to 50 km/h (31 mph), but then if you stick
    to 50 km/h there, you'll either be run over, or pulled by plod for a breath
    test.

    So no. I haven't.
