One of the biggest factors was Aston Martin using the M1 as a top speed
testing road. A newspaper headline claiming an Aston had hit 150 mph on
a public road was the nail in that particular coffin.

I thought it was AC testing their Le Mans Cobras with a journo present, but
I could be wrong. I normally am.

That quite probably contributed but my grandad and uncle Den, who were
both confirnmed petrolheads, told me the Aston story. I only lived a few
miles from the Aston factory, so it's kinda local folklore.

    You are joking, right?

Let's follow the police Roadcraft system of driving here, where you have
a "limit point", the point at which you can see to, and therefore your
    safe stopping distance.

I can think of hundreds of A roads where that point never gets below 160
feet, which is a tested stopping distance of a fairly average (Suzuki
    Bandit 600 [1]) motorcycle at 60MPH.

Most modern bikes have far better brakes than a suzuki banndit too.

    This is the AC story...

    http://www.classicdriver.com/uk/magazine/3200.asp?id=11841

Aston and Jaguar both also used to test their cars on the M1. I've heard the
same 'blame' attached to all three makes...

....and the limit was introduced at a time when only the best sports cars
could reach 100mph on radial tyres and drum brakes - it was probably
    sensible at the time.

However nowadays... most family cars will cruise happily at 100mph for hours
    on end.

The reason usually trotted out for keeping the 70mph limit is 'safety' but
over the last year or two I've heard more and more that it's 'to keep
pollution down and help fight Global Warming'.

Won't you think of the Chiillllddddrrrrrruuuuuuunnnnnnn!!!!!

If you could be bothered to wipe that BSEG off your face and divulge the
fine nitpicking point you are trying to put across, I'm sure we'd all love
to pack up and leave you alone. In your Supersize Portaloo.

Are you saying that you can legally and safely tow a 1200kg *actual* weight
trailer/caravan with a car with a rated maximum (braked) towing capacity of
    1000kg?

Or is it some other nitpicking point?

I believe an important tournament of Association Football is just
getting under way. I was given the result of England's game while on
the Polruan to Fowey pedestrian and cycle ferry. It was an own-goal,
they said, but who cares as long as it was scored at the Paraguayan
    end?

Later I was chased by a group of inebriated chavs in Newquay and I
assume the two events are in some way related. It was up a steep hill
but luckily I managed to sprint away in spite of the 320 km that were
already in my legs that day. The threatened beer bottle missile didn't
materialise either. Either that, or it missed by a very large margin.

Cycling can be a great spectator sport. Gliding less so, apart from
aerobatics of course, and competion finishes where the pilots dump
their water ballast before crossing the line at high speed and then
pulling back to circuit height. Marginal finishes where the competitor
dumped his water 2 hours ago, and where his computer tells him he just
about has enough height to reach the field at max glide can also be
entertaining, but not for the pilot concerned.

Extraordinary. I've not read down the bottom of the thread yet, but this

I suspect you have the words minority and majority completely confused
there. There is *no way& that >50% of the planet's population is taht
    interested.

Rangers vs Guardia Civil some time in the seventies was a bit of a
