Sadly some of us footy haters live where the competition is taking
place. Lived in Holland when the euro whatever was on, and now live
just outside Frankfurt when The *footy* world cup is on. My TV is
staying off (except for F1), cos it's either fotty or big brother and
then wombledon for WEEKS! But I still have to endure footy stuff in
every shop and bar and cafe. Surely they could play the games all end
to end and simultaneously, and get the whole thing over and done with
in 2 weeks, like any normal sport?

Still on the bright side, at least the Germans don't increase global
warming with those poncy chav car flags (one of which escaped and
nearly hit my rental car at the weekend). Don't mind people flying
flags for the day of the game, but do they really have to do it
    permanently?

B4234 and similar roads around the area for starters unless you can
bunny hop sheep, deer, and avoid trees. Which an alarming number of
fatalities in the last year show many car drivers can't...

Man, you're the expert, or so you'd have us believe.... Like I said in
my OP, these sceptered isles have *lots* of such roads.

Wrong again. You can't work it like that. Bzzt.
This is true. You're getting there.

Why should I move to Germany when I can legally travel on no speed
limit roads in what we laughingly refer to as Great Britain? But you
still haven't answered the question - why is it considered dangerous on
one road and not on another?

Strikes me that the only logical answer - taking in a bit of what
you've said up there - is that there are numpties and the only
practical way is to impose a blanket limit. However, that does not get
around the fundamental question I'm posing. And the only logical answer
to that is that any speed can be dangerous, given the circumstances.
30mph can be safe, but horrifying down a crowded urban street at school
chucking-out time. 100mph can be appallingly dangerous on some country
roads, but safe as houses on others. But you can't have a practical
system to asess indivudal risk all the time. So a blanket it is.

So answer my question. This is your third chance. You've fucked it up
    beautifully twice so far.

No, it's OK. He's still on the hook. It's old bait, but it still has
    potency.

That's the sort of concept I was suggesting, and I agree 100%.
Logically, it's the only solution that seems to make sense.

Are you going to name one? Or just refuse to answer it by making vague
    pronouncements.

So we are waiting for a single carriageway public highway upon which it
is legal to drive a motor vehicle owned and insured by a member of the
    public at greater than 60mph.

I'd be interested to know. (And BTW the motor vehicles bit is in there
because as you are no doubt aware the speed limits on normal roads[1]
do not apply to bicycles or horses)

And practically it makes little sense, however right it may be in
    theory.

Agree absolutely. But it has a lovely simlicity about it.

I've been very specific. No, I'm not going to name one yet, because I
like to see just how many people this stinky old bait manages to hook.
And it's *always* the car driving fraternity that sets the float
bobbing manically. Man, I'll get as much mileage out of this as
    possible.
Actually, no, I didn't know that. Ta.

  13. It may not matter to you but to millions in this country and billions
of others worldwide it does. The World Cup is the single biggest
sporting event in the World by far and that is why it is a major news
story. Just because the minority don't care doesn't mean the majority
    should be denied.
Again you are talking nonesense, or just about your thoughts and the
effect it would have for you. If England were to win the elation
around the country would be second to none. We'd probably even get a
day off work to celebrate and surely that's something to shout about,
unless of course you don't work.
