Cold starting (or not) tips please...

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Doesnotcompute, Nov 27, 2003.

  1. It would appear that with the change to somewhat colder weather (I'm
getting frost now) the VS is objecting to being run in the mornings.

I'm guessing this is cold related as opposed to my recent electrical
tinkering related because it's trying to turn over. Hell it is turning
over. Just not catching very well. after a few mins of turning it will
then catch better and better until vroom, all is well. I'm presuming
this is something warming up? plugs? fuel in carbs? furcked if I know.

I'm a bit concerned about what happens the day it doesn't catch, or I
kill the battery, whichever is sooner.

    So, any tips? [1]

[1] "get a real bike" or similar is not acceptable as a "tip" :)

    a) Take the plugs out and warm them with a blowtorch first.
    b) Use some easy-start to get it to catch...

    or...
    c) check all connections related to ignition. It could well be that
you've got a weak spark, removing any resistance in the connections due
to corrosion will improve this. Replacing the plugs won't hurt.

Remember, when it's cold the battery doesn't have as much oooommpphhh as
    it has when warm.

    Ah!

    d) light a small fire under the bike before trying to start it.

Angle grinder on the petrol tank. That'll warm it up.

  6. This is a pain in the arse on the VS, as the plugs are sunk nice and
deep inside the engine, so a long/thin handled plug spanner is needed
and a magnet on a tick for when the plug gets dropped inside the slot on
    the way out.

Chances are they'd prolly be cold again by them time they're screwed in
    and HT'd up.

....but in the OP's instance I'd try new ones first. Pretty cheap and may
    solve the problem.
