I did a little bit of practicing this morning.
Wanted to try out my idea of having ''leggins'' plus my goodlooking
Leather Chaps, that I got for my BD.
At 7a.m....It was about 39* with a bit of frost, when I took off, to
    ride the loop.
Hail I saw a Harley guy riding along with nothing on his pinHead...and
barely had a WS...made me feel odd, wearing all my shit.....but I'm
practicing for a Northern ride here in a coupla days....

  2. I've always ridden without a WS but always wear a helmet with a faceshield
or a full face with faceshild when it gets too nippy. It was supposed to get
    down to 39
here in Houston overnight. Judging by how it felt this AM getting the
    newspaper, I don't think it
    got near that cold.

  3. Good to see you practicing, BJay!

I'm probably not permitted to tell you this, but we have a secret
    weapon up here... Heated vests.

    =====Yeah I know about those.I've seen 'em in JCW catalogs......but I
doubt seriously you'd find many Texans wearing the Heated Vests.
Myabe those riders out west, around Amarillo..or up to El Paso
area....but around here...even when the day starts out 40 or
below...it just about always will be 10-20 degress warmer by
noon...then we have to start taking 'off' layers...RGD, you all up
there...have real winters, and it stays the same degree (like 32 or
below) day in and out...for days, I hear...
I can see that ya'll need the Heated Vests............stuff like
    that...................=MrJayT=

  7. Yep, and it's hardly noticable to the casual observer. Just this
little, inconspicuous wire coming down from under the jacket, attached
to a tiny plug-in coming out of the bike...

  8. Yeah, it sure is different up here. But we get used to it.

As an example, my wife went on a 400 mile ride today (by herself, it
being her day off). Rode all the way to Rocky Mountain House (near
the Rocky Mountains, as the name implies) on her Sporty. The
temperature was around 40 F when she left. She had a heated vest on.

I ride to work every day on the Street Bob and, more often than not,
it's below 32 F when I leave in the morning. No windshield on that
    bike to help out.

  13. It's just a lot tougher to get a bug meal with a derned windshield in front
    of your face.

  14. That's right. And besides, once the weather turns this cold, you
don't need a windshield to keep the bugs off ya. They're not flying
around anymore when they're all already dead! <g>

  15. Heh, heh. She told me about when she stopped in a tiny town to get
    gas yesterday.

As she dismounted her bike and went in to pay, there was an old man
watching her with a worried look on his face. When she returned to
the bike he walked up and asked if she was okay.

    "Aren't you cold?"

    "No, I'm just fine."

"Aren't you afraid of getting lost?"

"No, I have a map in my saddlebag, thanks."

She just giggled about it later. He was really concerned.

  17. I once saw a rider ahead of me, catch a June bug in the forehead
(after it missed his windshield), and he nearly got knocked out. I
have a friend called "Rock", for a reason. It missed his windshield
and near cracked open his skull. A rock kicked up by a truck, hit my
windshield so hard that it sounded like a gunshot. I have had stuff
smash into my helmet so hard that it knocked my head backwards. Birds
have bounced off Joe's windshield, while he was riding with me. I'm
going to use whatever protection I need. Not to mention that a
winshield is a handy place to duck down and ride behind, when it's
    pelting rain and hail.
A windshield also keeps my lungs from getting crushed, or my boobs
from flapping under my armpits while riding at 70+ mph. There's a
    picture for ya. ;-)

  18. Heh, heh. Yeah, that's something to picture alright!

While on the topic, do you ever get the wind oscillation so that your
jacket flaps just right? Not saying who, but a certain woman has
reported to me it's quite nice when it happens!

  19. Well the windshield is used for different puposes at different time of the
    year
at different locations. If I lived where the temperatures regularly dropped
below freezeing I think I would definitely have one. Especially for long
distance riding, which I haven't done in decades, it is especially needful.
I remember my ride Houston to Massachusetts and then to Montreal
and back in the 75 when my neck and shoulders were killing me. Not
    much fun there.

  20. The main thing I would like to prevent with the windshield is my moustache
hairs flying up my nose. I understand some windshield - bike combos don't
really prevent that and may actually encourage it.
