Cold backfiring

Discussion in 'Motorbike Technical Discussion' started by Duncan Cooper, Sep 10, 2003.

  1. Recently changed muffs on an XS400. Now the bike backfires when it's
cold. Almost exclusively when decelerating. Plugs are OK. I'm
wondering if the difference in backpressure has caused it. I'm no
tuning expert, and seek the "wisdom of the hive".

My thinking would be that you have disturbed a seal on the exhaust system
so,ewhere and it is sucking some air.. if the problem goes away when the
engine is hot, then the expansion of the metals is closing the opening...

  3. That's a reasonable place to start. There is actually a small exhaust
leak between the header pipe and the left muff.

    Thanx
