If *I* can do it for 14k miles without damage, then 'no'.

The ONLY reason i was asking, is that for the very first time on Thursday i
was on the bike ALL day, had three different pillions and on the way home
my left hand just froze up??? it was really painfull, i suppose like RSI
    ???

So, i've done it in a cage before when the clutch cable snapped and was
surprised to see how very easy it was. Only shifting up, not down.

I didn't *think* i was doing any damage as it didn't make any obscene noises
and thought it actually felt smoother, but if it's going to **** my gearbox
then i'll give it a miss.

When you time it properly it will actually do less damage than using
the clutch. When you do it badly you will damage your bike.

Catman secured a place in history by writing:
    Two ways IME (1) (2)

    (1) Nothing happens and your toes are compressing, so you give up.
    (2) clonck, crunch, lurch, visor contact with screen, legs flail....

Put fluffy ears/moheican/other helmet attire on, possibly with soem
    tireflys.

Right. I should be fine then :)

Though I was considering one of those repeater brake lights for the
    back of the helmet....
