Clutch kits

    Looking at Buster's Accessories website[1], I see that I can get a
    standard clutch kit for 43.95, plus a new set of springs for 7.95. Seems
    quite reasonable, really.

    Alternatively, I can get a so-called "heavy duty clutch kit" (including
    plates and springs) for 79.99.

    Is it worth the extra 30 quid for the heavy duty kit?

    And what's actually "heavy duty" about it? Stiffer springs? Longer
    lasting friction material? Will it make me more attractive to members of
    the opposite sex?



    [1] Can't be bothered shopping round, and I'm away from home so I can't
    just pop into my friendly local independent motorcycle accessories supplier.

    Almost certainly
    Less likely, tho it's possible the friction plates may be slightly
    thicker
    Even less likely.

    You forgot to answer this one.

    Definitely not worth the extra money.
    Because if I order it via Buster's, it'll be sitting waiting for me when
    I get home this Friday evening, and I can slap it straight in.

    I'd prefer to get it from local suppliers, but if I phone them up and
    ask if they've got one, I'd need to collect it, which I wouldn't be able
    to do for about three weeks.

    Is that alright?

    Sorry. It's for the Bidnat, yes? I don't know that much about them -
    are the cluthes known to be weak? Otherwise, if it's making stock
    horsepower, then I wouldn't think you need a heavy duty clutch.

    No - what I meant was "why don't you pick up the telephone and ask
    Busters the difference"

    I have a wife to do that for me.
    Not from wanking, no.
    How bad can it be? People used to complain about the Aprilia's, but I
    never found it a problem.

    Well, I haven't heard any stories about weak clutches, and I don't think
    the race can makes /that/ much difference to the power, so I guess
    that's the answer I'm looking for.

    (Note to self: must remember to ask ogden if it's had 1st and 2nd
    de-restricted. Or just look at the connector myself.)
    Oh, I see what you mean. Ummm... telephone-phobia? A slight suspicion
    that they'd try to sell me whatever made them the most profit? A
    mistaken belief that someone on ukrm would probably know more than one
    of Buster's sales droids? All of the above?

    Never, ever, ever shake either DNC or Blaney by the left hand.

    It's fine for a CIHAGM, but I could never own a bike with a clutch like
    that.

    No, I never did get around to doing the wires. Never saw the point, tbh.
    It's plenty punchy in the first two gears.

    I'd meant to get it dynoed as well, to see what difference the ART can
    made. I think I gave you the printout from the run with the stock can,
    at 102bhp. The race can should have added about another 10 to that but
    sheer apathy meant I never found out for sure (and it didn't seem worth
    sticking it on a dyno with a possible iffy clutch.)

    I didn't notice anything odd about the clutch when I road it (and I
    road it twice, once for about 15 miles).

    "Plenty punchy?" There's no such thing! Mind, it's not going to make
    much difference at the moment, given how worn out the clutch is - I
    haven't managed to lift the front wheel yet! =8-O

    I'll give it a go without the restriction once the new clutch is in, then.
    Given what happened when I was playing silly buggers on Sunday, the
    engine would hit the limiter and the dyno would stop at about 20 mph.

    I might do, next time I'm after something mentally stimulating.
    I'll give "Tommy" a miss, but I wouldn't mind scrounging "Fargo" sometime.

    I was *very* well behaved on the way home, but I noticed it tends to
    slip a /little/ under "normal-ish" acceleration when the engine's cold.

    Yesterday, trying to lift the front on the throttle in second resulted
    in a screaming engine and no significant forward motion. I think it's
    fucked. And I probably weigh more than you, which wouldn't have helped any.

    The thing that got me about it is the biting point is near to the
    fully-out position, whereas most/all the bikes I've had have it near
    the bar. With the clutch being as heavy as it is and the biting point
    being in an unfamiliar place I found it hard to adjust to in a few
    short miles.

    It wasn't too bad when moving, it was getting it moving that was the
    problem.
