    It can be done.

It isn't good for them. Most Guzzi mechs recommend against it. Do it
in an emergency OK, do it lots, expect to spend money.

Changing gears on the BMW witout the clutch is more problematic as it has an
engine speed gearbox, it cold be done but is very unkind to the gearbox.

No I haven't Johno. I've done the odd clutchless upchange when I've had my
hands full and it hasn't been a problem but I think down-changes would be a
    fairly clunky proposition.
Of course I'd do it at the drop of a hat if it was a choice between riding
home and leaving the bike and hitch-hiking!

(The slow, determined gear-changes was something I had to get used to first
with the oil-head and then even worse with the K. None of that snick-snick,
tappety-tap shit like on Jap 'boxes. (Mind you; like the funny
indicator-switches and the torque-reaction it's easily learnt and, once
you're used to it, you don't even think of it any more))

I had that experience in a Corolla too!
There's a circlip on the firewall that anchors the clutch-cable end and it
    breaks.
5c part but bloody annoying when it lets go!
Naturally I put two on when I replaced it. (But I bet the Toyota mechanics
    don't!)

Yep; that's my car method but most of the bikes I've tried it on had
clutch/gear cutouts that prevented it. ('cause of dumbarses standing beside
their bike and starting it to warm up and having it walk off the sidestand
    and fall on them!)

George; are you naturally stupid or are you just bunging it on for our
    benefit?
JL was telling you that MY post (about the Melbourne Lutwyche) was a joke!
It's no crime that you didn't get it but do you really have to make such a
    continuing stupid-fuckwit of yourself?

Ahhh Dubbya, you're starting to make the Shrub look smart. Indeed
genius, my posting wasn't the joke in question, no.
Why would I want to take a pay cut ?

Yup. I've done it a couple of times when I broke a clutch cable. I didn't
use Clem's method of starting though. When I really had to stop, like a red
light, use the kill switch. Put it in first and, when the light goes green,
    just press the start button.

    Is that the Melbourne Joyce?
Shit, even I got it the first time.

That's Perth time, not Melbourne time.

Obviously you forgot to put oil in it then.

My 69 Bonnie leaks without being run :)

In fact the Rudge Speedmanx wasn't introduced until 1927 - prior to that it
was known as. the RudgeInternational :)

Well, check where the starter cut-out operates.

On the BMW K100, provided you pulled in the clutch lever, even if the
cable was missing, the starter would work.

Provided the motor was warm, it would start, quite happily, in gear.

THe Norge won't let you start the bike in gear unless the clutch is
    pulled in.

Took me a minute or two to work that out the first time I came across
    it...

Fritz is the same however even with the clutch in, in first gear, it
cuts out if the stand comes down.

Likewise, took me a few moments to work it out too, as my habit had been
    first gear, then stand ..

I pissed myself laughing at this and then had to spend the next 5 minutes
    explaining myself to my wife!
