Clutch cable down

My new clutch cable died today, 3 weeks after it was fitted.

I was aiming for a garage so I could buy some fags on the way to work,
pulled the clutch in and got a 'pinging' sensation from the clutch
lever, and then no feedback from the clutch.

I must have been half way from changing down from 3rd to 2nd when the
clutch went ping but trundled across the other lane, past the petrol
pump and then hit the kill switch when I was almost where I wanted to
be. I bent down and looked at the top end, and bottom end and both
appeared to be attached still so assumed something had died in the
middle. After a quick walk into the shop to buy 40 fags and explain
why I would be hanging around for a while I phoned Auntie Carole who
recovered the bike the The Motorcycle Shoppie Who Installed The New
    Clutch Cable Three Weeks Ago.

    <worked 10:30 (an hour and a half late) - 17:00>

Popped back to Shoppe and they said that the 'nipple pair end'
(whatever that is) had snapped in the middle, brought this shiny bit
of broken metal out and showed it to me. Bloke commented that in 20
years of servicing bikes he'd never seen a nipple split. As I had
provided the replacement cable they decided I should pay for the new
    one they put together. £10.

My current car of 1999 vintage has a clutch cable and so does my 1997
    so-called dual sport bike.

Admittedly, the latter is a Guzzi.

  8. Clutch "cable". How quaint :)

I had a Ford Cortina with one of those once.

"One in to two cable splitter" would have caused less titlillation
    perhaps.

Bad form.. For some reason I was thinking throttle cable. Still can't
quite work out how a nipple can go in the 'middle ' of a clutch cable
    though.

All proper sports bikes have cable clutches...and Bandit 600s too.

The nipple wasn't in the middle, it's the bit that goes into the
gearbox (or wherever) on the bike.

When I 'stopped' I gave both ends a good tug but both appeared to be
in. As the nipple (that goes into the clutch gear wotsit thinger) had
snapped half way I couldn't yank it out so assumed that something had
gone ping in the middle (not at either end) but it turns the nipple
thinger had pinged in the dark and mystical place that I dare not look
(the metal bit that makes noises and chugs)

While it did come with the bike as a spare it's not home made.

Mr. Muck, lord of molishing, had some kind of 50cc scooter (or
similar) cable, but as the B6's clutch is quite heavy suggested I swap
it. I've had the Bandit for quite a few months now and only just got
the cable changed to the new virgin (GSXR750 or summut) cable which
    lasted 3 weeks.

The Lord's scooter cable is still under the seat in working order
which is where it's likely to stay in case I need it.

    BGN says...
I'd get someone to have a look at the worm gear that actuates the clutch
down at the business end. On my Bandit it was fucked at 50,000 miles.
They cost 25 quid and make the clutch a lot lighter when replaced.

I see. On arrangements where the biggish round bit in the handlebar
lever end is a separate, and the cable has a small nipple on the end
that runs through a slot in the round bit, they have been known to slip
out. <titter ye not at the back there>

So's the Guzzi's actually. I was quite surprised. The only downer is
that it eats cables every 9-10K miles.
