any suggestions for getting a load of black crud off the rims of
spoked wheels, where the previous owner of a bike clearly hasn't
    cleaned them in years?

I've always used Wonderwheels on alloys, but not sure if this is a go-
    er on stainless rims/spokes?

Not sure I would put acid on them TBH. Halfords will probably do some spiffy
product but they also do a fine variety of wheel brushes that take care of
    it nicely.

    Alternatively "get a man in"

If this is the Tiger, the rims are alloy & the spokes non-stainless
    steel, unless they've been replaced.

If they are plain ally then deffo no strong acid. Good brushes and some Muc
    Off.

You could threaten Phil to come and clean the fucker of course. Is he also
    related to Bear?

Another possibility would be crossing the Speedyspic with much Wonga for one
of his famous "2 Day Valets"

it is the Tiger, and I'm pretty sure they're the standard wheels - I
assumed the rims where steel, rather than alloy for...well, no reason
at all, really. They're really absolutely bogging i.e. almost
completely covered in thick black greasy muck that's pressure-washer
    resistant.

Start with a spray solvent like WD40 or better yet a specific
degreaser like Finish Line; sitrus-based, incredibly effective and
    leaves no residue.

There you go Darsy. £30 for a cleanup plus £20 for ally spoked wheel
    polishing. Perfect.

Shame they don'y travel to Leeds.

IIRC, it's designed for /lacquered/ alloy wheels - if the wheels are
scuffed or chips, it exacerbates the problem.

Persactly. It is designed for car wheels, which are painted and/or
    lacquered.
Put even weak acid on polished ally and it will react quickly enough. I
doubt the spoked rims are lacquered as they probably flex.

  18. Gunk or Jizer or any similar degreaser, not the spray on-stuff, worked
in well with a paintbrush. And then hosepipe.

    Easy.

  20. How dare you! Cleaning? Me?

And the only way I'm related to Bear is by being a member of a
    proximate species..
