Short answer, because they encode a group's ethics and values. They
can help move humans' behaviour. The things people are asked to swear
to are what that group (be that a profession, community, state or
religion) holds of importance. They can allow control and if broken a
member risks becoming an outcast with the subsequent consequences.

The consequences for oath breaking were severe. Our (generic) culture
has moved away from this, though in some cases (Hippocratic oath for
    example) it still applies.

This may be of interest given UKRMs general professional make up - a
discussion of should there be an oath for scientists and engineers.

Touché. But in fact there's been the most exciting racing this season
for as long as I can remember. Bloke pitting out of sequence and
rejoining in fifth with less than a quarter of the race left, then
overtaking them all to get the win. And bloody close overtakes they
    were too.

OK, so it wasn't _quite_ as exciting as the MotoGP I watched later the
same day (Laguna Seca) but it was damned close.
I fail to see a big difference. If I'm interested in something I must
care about it at least a little bit, otherwise why would I be
    interested?

I thought of an alternative which seemed a glowing beacon of light for
a moment but in reality wouldn't work - ban all advertising of
    anything, ever.
The circulation/readership is actually small, but the contents have
become media norm in that sector.
Here, have a really shit, badly written and unreferenced article which
    attempts to explain the interest.

No. My days of caring are over. Almost. There's bugger all we can do
to change a sick society so I'm going to carry on being maladjusted to
    it.

Time to roll out an old sig.

**** that. The only 'oath' that scares me is the official secrets act
and that's only because the bastards can jail me for something I might
    have said.

The Official Secrets Act isn't an 'oath', it's an act of Parliament. You
are bound by it whether or not you have 'sworn' or 'signed' it.

    I think there's a distinction between a non-entity or the average
'celebrity' whose activities are probably of no interest whatsoever to most
people and a person who has created an image of himself as a family man and
devoted husband, and plays on that image to earn fame and/or money. He's
cheating in the same way as, say, Dwayne Chambers and Ben Johnson cheated,
purely for self-interest. Shouldn't people like that be exposed?
