Clattery, clat-tat-tatery. Errr, help!

The ol' faithful Fazer6 is starting to make disturbing clattering noises
from deep within the engine in a "terminal soon" type of way. It's most
noticeable when cold and keeps time with the rpms especially on a closed or
neutral throttle. I assume this is "not a good thing" [tm]

I'm thinking (or rather completely guessing) cam chain given the milage
(50k) and the lack of any major servicing save the valve check at around
28k. Looking in the HBoL all I see are scary pictures of engine internals
in a spotless workshop with all the appropriate tools to hand. This does
not describe the situation in my garage.

With my current cash flow, taking it do a dealer (aka Cane stylee) to fix
isn't an option so I'm going to have to spanner it myself. Ideas,
suggestions, and offers of assistance all greatfully received.

I think the cam-chain on Fazers runs up the centre of the engine which
means it's a much bigger job than engines which have the chain on the
side. Personally I wouldn't dream of tackling somthing like this but I'm
    a complete mechanical numpty.

With luck, as others have said, it sounds like the cam chain. My one does
this when the chain needs adjustment (manual adjuster see). Seeing as your
bike doesn't have a manual adjuster the chain is fucked. With good
fortune, none of your valves or cam lobes are fucked either.
