Classic Fairing Screen

Discussion in 'Classic Motorbikes' started by Chris Malcolm, Oct 2, 2005.

  1. The wind blew over my parked 1981 Honda CX500 and smashed the ancient
custom fairing screen of unknown make. But I do have enough bits to
be able to glue up a facsimile of what I want which I presume could be
used as a mold to form a perspex or polycarbonate sheet. Maybe I could
even do it myself from falt sheet with patience and a hairdryer?

Anyone have experience of good places to find old fairing screens or
    get specials made?

It's the old-fashioned traditional "police" tourer shape of a
cylindrically curved blade wrapping round towards the hands which is
also bent a bit more vertical at the top as though to push the air
    stream higher over the head.

The pieces you have cannot be part of the moulding tool as they will
soften at the same temperature as the new material.

The cost of getting fabricator to reproduce one would, should be
hundreds of pounds rather than tens. In the time you'd spend ruining
innocent polycarbonate [that's what you need] sheet you'd be better
off searching the net for a breaker or an original spare.

Stick a picture of it up on a website somewhere, and post the URL. Five
minutes later, you'll have someone saying "Ah. That's an old
Avon/Rickman/whatever, and you can get a new screen from so-and-so."
    Probably.

  5. There was one available on ebay earlier today attached to a Handa 400/4 but
may be a universal fit. A few mins search should reveal it.

  8. I saw that and emailed the seller to enquire if it's a foreign import.
    No reply yet.

Japanese and US 400 Fours got black side panels - European models
didn't. The bars are also definitely US-spec.

The rear light bracket should be black, not chromed, and the
black-painted engine is horrible, especially set against the polished
    alloy covers.

I would call it "over restored" and suggest that if he spent £2500 on
doing it up, then he wasted a lot of his money.

  9. and dead poor form mentioning the fact, too. I presume he hopes to get his
money back. If so, he's deluded. You almost never get your money back on
    such a job.

Reflectors on the side of the headlight suggest it's a US spec one, or
did UK ones have the same?

I was wondering about the clutch cable. Is it meant to be where it is?
    Looks daft.

  12. No, UK ones have them. They command silly prices - I sold a pair for
about 20 quid not so long ago.

You might be thinking about reflectors built into rear shocks, which is
    *definitely* a US giveaway sign.

  13. Got a reply. He repsrayed the panels black because he liked it that way.
And the bars are (indeed) US because he prefers an upright riding
position. But the bike is a UK model.

Still doesn't stop it being a mess, though.

It looks so wrong with the black engine and sidepanels, no matter how
nice the paint finish might be.
