Got a 1999 Triumph Daytona 1200 SE, just had one of 2 ignition coils
replaced and the slave cyclinder on the clutch rebuilt after it broke

Recently when I start the bike, I press the starter button and there is
a nasty clanking noise, that seems to be coming from the crank case,
bike eventually fires and runs perfectly, but it sounds horredendous
    till it starts.

If you put your hand on the casing, you can actually feel the knocking

    Anyone got an idea

Is there a spanner on the garage bill?

Sprag clutch? If so, phuqt. If so, either expensive at a dealer or a
*very* tricky job to do yourself.

Starter motor clutch. Known weak spot on Triumphs, although I thought
    they'd modded them by 1999.

As Triumph based their early engines on Kawasakis, replacing the clutch
is a massive job. Engine out, and expect a bill of at least £800 from
    a dealer.

    says...
    Wot he said.

You can find out more about it, or even what's involved in replacing it
    from the guys at www.t595.net

Apparently it's a common enough problem with pretty much all Triumphs,
    even the more recent ones.

  8. Main culprit is the battery. They fit small ones to the Trumfs, and when
they get a bit tired, especially in cold weather, they start to struggle
to turn the lump over, and then it kicks back against the starter
    clutch, and *bang*.

Solution: always make sure the battery is fighting fit.

    The Older Gentleman says...
Mine is always on the Optimate when I know it won't be used for a few
days, the alarm drains it otherwise.

I just put a Bandit 1200 YTX12-BS battery on the Bandit, standard for
the 600 is a YTX9-BS. There's room for a YTX12 if you pull the huge foam
block from under the YTX9 and the Bandit 1200 runs the same alternator
and charging system, so in it went to give me a bit more starting power
    in winter.

    (The Older Gentleman) wrote in
and fit a Hawker Odyssey AGM battery when the OE packs up. The construction
apparently gives a battery that a) discharges very little in storage and b)
delivers max Ah more readily, especially when cold.

Said battery has eliminated the ABS initialisation issues I had with the OE
Bosch jobbie. Costs £68, which is a little more than a Yuasa and less than
    an OE replacement, from http://www.cheshirebatteries.co.uk/

http://www.odysseyfactory.com/ - although the fitment guide only shows the
Daytona 600. Odd: sure to be a PC680 or PC310 as most are one of the two

As others have said it's the sprag (starter) clutch. It was
under-engineered in pre mid-90s models, but later models have also been
    known to fail.

Many people including myself have convinced Triumph to cover the parts
cost well after the warranty expired, but that will depend on it having
a full main dealer service history, & on your letter writing ability.
Even if you manage that, you're still looking at a £400+ bill for
labour (it's an engine out job).

When you get it fixed, make sure you keep the battery fully charged to
stop it happening again. Also be firm with the starter button - don't
'stab' it & release it quickly - keep it engaged for at least a couple
of seconds or until the engine starts.

Thanks to everyone who has responded, while its depressing to get the
same answer from everyone thus confirming I have a big job ahead, the
    rapid response was excellent.

Bike now booked in for the new year to get the f'ing clutch replaced
    !!!!!

    Cheers All and Merry Xmas

Cheers, I have a Yuasa in at the moment, but have moved house and the
the bike is outside in the cold at the moment, from the rest of the
comments on the forum appears to be a cause as normally when it was in
a garage it was always on the Optimate.

    Oh well expensive lesson learnt

You're talking about your 1150GS here, right? Because I'll bear this in
mind for when I need a replacement for my ABS-equipped K's battery. Ta.

Update, they are out of stock PC680, awaiting delivery. I'm on their list.
Present price ca £58 inc they are expecting a price rise (10-14%) due to
    shortage of lead.

    That'll be Iraqistan then.
