Or a novella, or a short story, or an epic.
You misunderstand. He doesn't *have* to have someone draw pictures as
well, but I suspect you know this already.

Have *you* read any of the items in question?

And lets not forget that large chunks of it have no illustrations.

I read plenty when I was about 12.

You comic-fanboys really do take this seriously, don't you.

No, like I said up there ^^^^ I don't GAF what it's called. You seem to
be frothing at the mouth for some kind of reaction.

I'm just slightly curious about the reaction that's being sparked.

I'm with Bear on this one.

Graphic novels aren't to everybody's taste, but wonderful things have been
done with them in the past 25 years, a lot of it by British authors, and to
have pseudo-intellectuals snub them because they assume that they know
everything about them, having read an issue of "The Amazing Spider-Man" in
    1978, is rather irritating.

How many people on here slag off mcn without having read the most
    recent issue?

You read comics. It's not a crime and you're not going on a comic
reading offenders list so why deny it?

I don't know, but I do know that the Odeon *really* aren't taking bookings
    for "MCN: The musical".
I do read comics, yes (although not often these days), but I also read
graphic novels and get mildly miffed when cunts who know nothing about
either think it's clever to suggest that they are one and the same.

A combination of trolling to alleviate monday morning boredom, and a
genuine mild fascination at just how twisted some peoples knickers get
when anyone calls a comic a comic.

I have a fondness for Tintin and Asterix, but I don't pretend they're
    adult material.

by admitting it you've taken the first step towards curing yourself.

Spiderman is a comic, so is most of Batman, although Frank Miller's "Batman:
The dark knight returns" is considered one of the most influential graphic
novels of the 80s - personally, I'm not that fond of it, but there you go.
That's fine, but you really are missing out on some truly wonderful
experiences - the medium is *so* much more than just superheroes.

Well, Watchmen wasn't published until 1986.
You seem to be obsessed, at least with the trolling part.
Very different things. I'd agree that they are comics.

Upon what are you basing your definition?

Is your maths a bit shonky or what?

    I was 12 in 1989.

    How about Wikipedia's definition?

"Comics (via Latin, from the Greek ko-mikos, of or pertaining to
"comedy", from ko-mos "revel".[1]) is a graphic medium in which images
are utilized in order to convey a sequential narrative; the term,
derived from massive early use to convey comic themes, came to be
applied to all uses of this medium including those which are far from
    comic."

Sounds pretty unambiguous to me. It might be a "graphic novel", it's
    still a comic.

Nah, I thought I'd save him for the book thread - especially as I've just
enjoyed his work for children, "The graveyard book".

Also I don't want to pander to Ogden's prejudices more than I have to, and
Neil Gaiman is best known for the Sandman graphic novel series, which
manages to include superheroes, dragons, wizards and vampires[1], as well as
hundreds of assorted gods, talking animals, Satan, lesbians, a man with a
pumpkin for a head and a central character who is the personification of
    dreaming.

Actually, sitting here I'd just noticed my copy of "The complete D.R. &
Quinch", written by Alan Moore[1], which really was written for a children's
comic[2] and started dipping in to that ...

'Adjusting my earmuffs and flashgoggles, I gave the official space marines
war cry ... "Eat plutonium death, you disgusting alien weirdos!"'. I'm sure
it wouldn't be allowed these days.

    [1] Who did Watchmen.
