Why, oh why, oh why can I now book on-line to see Watchmen on Friday in any
Odeon cinema in the UK except Gateshead, eh?

And why is it the same story with the Empire cinema chain - they'll let me
go and watch it in Sunderland, but not Newcastle. I mean - Sunderland!
They still scream when the train comes towards them there.

As if it weren't tragic enough that I'm such a big fan of graphic novels
that I want to see this film on the day it comes out and, sadder still, that
I'm going to go by myself because I have nothing else to fill the yawning
void of my days, but now I have to phone them and beg them to sell me a
    ticket.

Oh to be reduced to this.

Please be honest and call them comics.

Ooo, hark at the "strawberry blonde" one talking about honest descriptions.

Have you ever read one? Just curious. Personally I don't GAF what they
are called, but there is rather a difference between, say, The Beano
(which I think of when someone says 'comic') and The Watchmen which, if
nothing else, has at least the same number of pages as any year of the
    Beano's output.

After all, one wouldn't use the same word to describe the folded sheet
of paper from which one could select one's desired pizza for delivery
and War and Peace simply because they are both made of paper and have
    words printed on them.

it's not really a moniker I'm at all comfortable

Conversely, one wouldn't describe the latter as a 'wordy novel'. It's
either a novel or it isn't. And a book written by someone with such a
poor grip on illustrative language that they have to have someone draw
    pictures, well, isn't. It's a comic.

To be honest it matters not a jot to me whether you think of graphic novels
as being comic or not, but you've clearly not read Watchmen if you think
that Alan Moore has a poor grasp of illustrative language.

Still, if you're happy flaunting your ignorance in public then who am I to
    stand in your way?

I'm not disagreeing, but just in caase you don't know this:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maus

    .... recommended.

Mind you, Wikipedia describes it as a "graphic novel" which still seems
wrong in a couple of ways at least.

Why would I want to read it? Even JK Rowling kept the pictures to just
    the cover.

Why wouldn't you want to read it? It's got superheroes and pictures and
    stuff.
I'm going to get a copy from the library just as soon as I've finished
the Thackeray, Maugham and Woolf on the table beside my chair.

Why indeed - if you're so small minded that you can't conceive of a world
beyond your own prejudices then it would surely be wasted on you.
