For those who may not have noticed BBC4 are repeating the first series of "A
    very peculiar practice" this week.

Unfortunately I didn't realise until I channel-hopped in on the end of one
    of the episodes yesterday night.

However, there's 3 more episodes this evening from 10:40 onwards.

For the pikeys without digital TV there's always sitting around the piano
having a good ol' fashioned sing-song. For those too young to remember AVPP
from its first time around, watch and learn. For those too young and too
pikey ... well, there's just no hope for you, really.

Hang on, got to go - there's a couple of nuns going through my bins.

  2. Never saw the whole series, although I did appear ever so briefly as an
extra in a lecture theatre scene - much of it was filmed in and around
Birmingham University during my final year.

It's stood the test of time pretty well, too.

Watching last night I still found it genuinely funny, strange and very
    enjoyable.

  6. I only spotted that today, aamof. Given that I just reread the book a
couple of weeks ago, it ties in nicely.

With any luck, "A most peculiar practice" might be on sometime soon.

Well, you know half of it. It was Birmingham and Keele.

Quite a few of the scenes from Birmingham were taken around the
Metallurgy Department I used to attend....occasionally.

  9. And "Elec Eng" and also the Gunbarrels pub on Bristol Rd/Edgbaston Park
    Road.
I used to attend the Guild more regularly than Elec Eng!

When I ordered it back in August it was due for release in October.
Then it was November. Then it was early January. Any advance on 20th
    January?

  11. It was released on video or DVD a year or two ago, but from such an
obscure source I couldn't get one. Bugger!!! But the second series
hasn't been re-played or released. GRRRRRRR!

I remember. 'Leccy Eng was the building with the huge
(non-functional?) dish on top. I was told that they put the dish up
and then found that vibration from the railway just down the road made
    it NFG. Is that true?

  13. A nephew of mine who goes to BU was subject of an attempted mugging just
before Xmas. Three somewhat larger guys (hooded sweat shirts etc)
cornered him and demanded his money and his mobile phone or he'd get
    cut.

The second mistake one of the guys made was to reach out for him. The
reacher was decked unconscious. My nephew then asked which had the knife
as he wanted to break their arms so they couldn't use it. They ran away.

Nephew is one very skilled multi-belted marshal arts exponent.
I hope these arse holes learnt something.

  14. That's right, the Gisbert Krapp building.... ooops, superfluos "r" there.

The dish has been functional in the past but during my time at Brum (82-86)
it was taken out of service for a major overhaul and upgrade of the signal
wiring. Whether or not its ever got back into commission I don't know. I
never heard the rumour about the vibration, but there were a couple floating
about in my day about the (in)competence of the civil engineers!
1985 was my second second year (not a stutter!) and I was to be found
floating mainly aorund GTV & Stage Staff in Guild making much use of the
Cellar & Mermaid bars with catering by McDochertys (YUK!!!!).

    Cheers
