I've got pretty much all of the lawyer's immediate family round here for
    Christmas. And their dog.

Note to self: buy more port and razorblades.

Do you have a favorite recpie for a port-based dog marinade
    that you'd like to share?

Yeah, candles performing miracles, that's what the clever people
    celebrate.

    'Candles performing miracles'?

    Which religion is that, then?

Yes. Generally they run out of space on their Saxos and 206s, so use them
    on the house.

Sharks are so yesterday. What you need is a nice - well, slightly
grumpy - leopard of some description...

True. Very true. But where to find one at reasonable rates? It's a
puzzle. Let's try a small ad:

SITUATIONS VACANT: Exclusive opportunity for slightly grumpy leopard.
Accommodation included (choice of dry or wet moat). Hours to suit. No
experience necessary. Must be prepared to rip itinerant porridge-wogs
limb from limb. Excellent package to include an endless supply of decent
Shiraz and all the invaders you can eat. Application with full CV and
naked photographs to address in headers.

I'm rostered to work over Xmas & NY. This is great as I can bank those
hours to use later when the weather is warmer. I also get an additional
payment for being such a martyr.

    We've done this. You're not a race. You're barely a species.

    Yours, you div

"Hanukkah, from the Hebrew word for "dedication" or "consecration",
marks the re-dedication of the Temple in Jerusalem after its
desecration by the forces of Antiochus IV and commemorates the
"miracle of the container of oil." According to the Talmud, at the re-
dedication following the victory of the Maccabees over the Seleucid
Empire, there was only enough consecrated olive oil to fuel the
eternal flame in the Temple for one day. Miraculously, the oil burned
for eight days, which was the length of time it took to press, prepare
    and consecrate fresh olive oil."

This is why you light the eight candles, one day at a time.

  15. Um - much as I hate to be on the side of Des but..
The Menorah in the Temple wasn't candles - it was an 8-branched
oil-burning lamp. So it wasn't 'candles performing miracles' as such -
more like an auto-regenerating source of oil..
Which is a secular adaption of the event (since we can't summon
miracles on demand! - even in Tech Support..)

    I know - call me a pedant.
