Someone got an unexpected pressie tonight. A nice shiny Audi R8. Delivered
right to their door. Well almost.

A serious lack of judgement resulted in the driver missing the door, but he
obviously wanted very much to deliver this car, so he drove it off the
street, up an 8 foot banking, across the lawn and directly into their living
room. At speed going off the marks hither and thither.

Lots of exciting ambulance, police and fire brigade activity and no doubt
someone to find a hotel room for the house occupiers.

As I drove (very slowly) past this incident, I could see the driver been
"addressed" by plod and before I could stop myself, I'd leaned out of the
window and said "I don't belieeeve you meant to do tha-at".

    Then I fucked off smartish.

    I'd love an RS6 Avant
I came within about 3 inches of putting my 2nd ZZR1100 into the back end
of an orange one on a BOTAFOT run about 4 years ago, just after I had
the worst tankslapper of my biking life after jumping Bear's Leap at
    120. That was the day I discovered tyre pressures of about 10psi in each
end were the cause of me leaving big black lines out of corners, and
MattG nearly crashing because he was laughing so much at it.

    Oh happy days.

It's a Vauxhall. They all cook their brakes at the least provocation.
Can you explain what you mean about tyres and diameters?

Do you mean that the new tyre was labelled as a different size to the
    old one
or that it was supposed to be the same size but was actually a bit
    bigger (or smaller)?

I wonder if putting bigger wheels on the back axle* would confuse ABS.
It's not unreasonable that different sizes on the same axle would do so.

    * On a RWD car, obviously. Otherwise it would be very silly.

  9. That's what I was thinking. Different aspect ratios, diameters,
whetever. I suppose the sensor on that particular wheel would be out of
synch with sensors on other wheels, and the computer would throw a sulk.

Only guessing, mind, because it's a bloody odd one. Fascinating, though.

What we need is a complete lunatic to go out and bolt different sized
wheels onto their ABS-kitted car and report back.

    Petel?

  10. A quick google does indeed throw up instances of ABS problems after new
    tyre fitment on some Vauxhalls.

  11. Yes, it would. Think about it. The outer wheel is on a wider radius
curve so has to go faster.

It raises the interesting question of how fast you have to corner before
you rip the car in half :)

    The Older Gentleman says...
    I'm up for it.

When ABS was in its infancy me and some of the guys I worked with used
to try and catch it out by accelerating and left foot braking with two
wheels on mud and that sort of thing. Hondas were easy to confuse and we
did actually screw up the ABS module on a brand new Prelude once to the
extent that it cut in at the slightest touch of the brakes.

Best of the lot was confusing the 4 Wheel Steering system on a Prelude
by doing the left foot braking and accelerating thing while giving the
steering a good couple of turns at the same time. Made a Prelude swing
the arse end out horribly and they then handled like Mk3 Cortinas from
    then on.

When I was at Millbrook I was test driving the then unreleased Jaguar
XK8. I was driving one at about 145 round the bowl and had to do a
scheduled emergency stop in what's known as a 'brake pad' on the inside
of the hard shoulder. They are about a 1/4 mile long and designed for
you to drive into at high speed and slam the brakes on hard to a stop. I
made my way down the bowl to the bottom lane still carrying a lot of
speed, entered a pad and waited til I judged enough room to stop at the
end, just in case someone came in behind me. A 1/4 mile brake pad curves
slightly, so as you enter it you can't see the end because trees block
your vision - you always stopped at the far end in case someone came
tear-arsing in and hit you up the rear at full pelt. Well, I left the
braking til the very last second giving loads of time for a full ABS
controlled stop...only the car didn't have the ABS connected. I flew off
the tarmac at the end of the pad at about 90mph with the wheels locked
up and into the gravel trap, skimmed the top of the gravel and off the
end of that and onto the grass, where I span twice, somehow missing the
trees, before coming to a stop.

I drove it back to the workshops and had a bit of a rant at the resident
Jaguar engineer for not marking the lack of ABS on the vehicle docs.

I'd previously had similar happen with a Jaguar XJ6 when I was fitting
electric sunroofs. No-one had told me that the smaller engined XJ6
didn't have ABS as standard, so when I slammed the brakes on to see if
the sunblind shot forward the car locked up and went sideways. Scary.

  17. Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, The Older
Forgive me for being cynical, but I see evidence that tyres could cause
the ABS to fault. I can believe that.

I see *no* evidence that tyres could cause the entire braking system to
    fail.

Well, allow me to rephrase that. I have Nige's posting.

I see *no credible* evidence that tyres could cause the entire braking
    system to fail.
