My R6 that got stolen was actually recovered 2 days later from a house in
Corby, along with three other bikes. It took the recovery people 12 days to
notify me, and then I was at work so the registered letter went back to the
post office. So of course i'm paying storage for each day coming to a total
    bill of £201.
They managed to smash the steering lock, drilled out the lock barrel from
the petrol cap plus they ripped off the mirror. Not too bad all in all. Well
not too bad until I phoned up carole nash and discovered i've got £600
excess. They managed to remove the oxford disc lock with no apparant damage
to the disc. Split my new 7 day old double bubble and scratched up various
fairing panels. Oh well. I'm not bitter.
Do I claim or do I not?

If you don't claim on the insurance [1] I'd get proof from the police
when the bike was found then deduct all the extra days storage cost.
That sounds like a lovely scam by the storage company, take it back to
their place and start charging *you* a daily rate then decide at their
leisure when to tell you of this charge! A couple of days is fine but
it shouldn't take nearly two weeks to notify you even if they didn't
know the registered keeper when they collected it.
    Worrying!

Depends how many years NCB you have. Don't forget you'll also be
paying for it in increased premiums for a few years to come. IMO you
should work out the numbers for fixing it yourself and calculate
premiums with a 20% *minimum* insurance rise for the next five years
and if it's borderline I wouldn't bother claiming.
    Indeed!(

[1] Actually even if you do it maybe worth it.

Yeah, unfortunately fire lighters are not a recoverable expense.

    Good news/bad news day?

The storage seems to be a bit of a rip off, to say the least.
I would be worried about the OXford lock, but mine is another make.
    Perhaps I should still worry.

The claiming thing is still a bugger. When I binned the Bandit it cost
me £500 to put it all right (including lid) so I did it myself to keep a
clear record, but if it had been much more...

I've just checked the paper work, recovered on the 9th and I got an
attempted delivery on the 21st. I'm not sure what's involved in tracing the
owner by using the frame number etc. The best of it is, they also nicked my
mates bike who lives in the next street, they recovered his at the same
time, then sent his notice of recovery to the wrong fucking address in
another town!, if I hadn't seen his he'd be none the wiser even now. Plus
when I read the paperwork it says that if I hadn't collect by october 22nd
they reserved the right to sell my bike to recover the cost of
collection/storage, I didn't even see the letter until the 25th.
I'm worried now, I thought they'd vanned it, the immobiliser is under the
passenger seat hump and the hump hadn't been removed. The immobiliser LED
was still flashing when I got the bike back, but I know they'd had the seat
off. I'm wondering now as to whether they pushed it round the corner,
somehow got the disc lock off, then somehow bypassed the immobiliser and rid
it away. I was only half happy because I was convinced it hadn't been
ridden, but i'm not so sure now.
4 yrs NCB which'll go to 2 years. If the damage quote is less than £400
(bearing in mind i've already spent £200 on storage) then I won't claim. All
I can do now is see what they say. How much I wonder for a new set of clocks
and some minor paintwork repairs. About a grand I should imagine, knowing my
    luck.

Hmm, i've just rang the crime unit. What they're telling me doesn't tie in
with what the recovery people told me. The bike was recovered from garages
in an area dubbed as little beirut. From what I can gather these garages are
often not taken up by the residents on the estate, so they are left empty.
It sounds like people just use them as they want. No arrests were made.
I was told that every couple of months the council go round to each of the
garages that haven't been taken up, and, i'd be surprised as to what they
    find in them.

I cannot find a single mark on the brake disc, it's almost as if the lock
was made of chocolate. I've just bought one which has an alarm, and that
does violate your eardrums, I can tell ya..lol.
Sounds like i've just got in the same boat as you then.

    Well to start you off...

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2439069134&category=25632

Another search for R6 fairing pulled back about 20 results.
Seriously, if you're looking at fixing it up yourself ebay can be real
    useful.

Failing that try some of these racing websites. They usually have
road plastics for sale that have been taken off for racing. If
there's none on there put a wanted ad on...

selling the goodies on ebay. Thanks for the web addys. i'll go and have a
    shifty at those.

How much jiggling about does it need to set one off? I'd considered
getting one myself, but as my bike is kept on the road I was concerned
that vibractions from passing vehicles or strong winds might set it off.

If the area is as they say then some aspiring vigilantes should at least
film the place and pass the results on to plod (and the beeb and the

will find someone if you look hard enough.

I live in Corby, and had my bike nicked last August - the bare frame was
found about 4 days later completely striped of everything - not a mark on
    it.

they had to come in the front gate - trigger all the security lights, crop
the bolt on the shed, snap the steering lock, get past the oxford omega disk
lock, move all the garden furniture to allow them to unscrew/remove a rear
fence panel (the car blocks the front gate at night). All this between 1am
and 5am, sunny night and window open - I never heard a thing. they also took
my mates bike from 3 door down, pretty much the same operation, so it's fair
to say they were fairly accomplished in what they were doing.

Not even a police visit, just here's your crime No. and off you go. Bearing
in mind the bike was recovered within 10 miles it's fair to say (Imho) it
was a local group - I put this to the coppers who gave me a local name,
supposedly notorious for bike theft. When I asked why they didn't pay a
visit just in case all I got was a blank response. no fingerprinting or
    anything - complete apathy.

It's pretty good, mine is outside with a cover over it and it hasn't gone
off yet, though I booted the front wheel once and it 2 bleeped before going
off on one. It's not too sensitive i'd say.

Sorry to hear that mate. I know what you mean though, my bike was parked
under the bedroom window (open) and I never heard a damned thing either, and
the bloody dawn chorus wakes me up. I can't suss out exactly what's happened
but mine was recovered from Eastbrook..
I know it's pretty bad round corby, I bought an RGV from some guy in
Danesholm who was telling me about thefts about 4 years ago.
If the cops really wanted to nail this lot all they need is an R1 with a
tracker on board. It would be as easy as that. I don't think they're that
bothered. They could've done a stakeout on my bike and caught them
    redhanded.

I dunno about that, I think old K who lives there might agree with me on
this, but, you honestly wouldn't want to get caught filming in some of those
areas. If you had an undercover unmarked troop carrier handy you might get
away with it. You'd need an aspiring suicide cameraman for that detail, lol.

This is why people are soo pissed off and disrespectful of the police.
They're all over the place trying to catch people speeding, but real crime
that affects real people is far too trivial for them to bother with.

Its out of order that you can't own a sports bike without worrying about the
    local scrotes nicking it!
