    U recon?

11 years to win 5 W/Championships on the best bike..

Vale has done that in 6 years and his win rate is a good 15% better and
has never finished the Championship lower than 2nd spot [his first
year] AND with a inferior bike and against a army....

    ....of spineless sheilas!

Wayne Rainey has a more complete spine than walk-all-over-me Gibernau!
Rainey, Gardner, Lawson, Schwantz were Doohan's peers...
(and after they retired he was peerless)

Wake me up when a REAL challenger appears.

Ummm... you better re-check your statistics. He may have 4 from 4, but Rossi
has not equalled Doohan's 5 consecutive 500cc/motogp world championships yet,
    nor bettered it.

anyhow.. why does someone need to be better than Rossi to be considered
    "good"?

But only because there is no 500cc/motogp

    Prezactly

The MotoGP are around 5s+ a lap faster and around 50HP more and
knocking on 350km/h, Doohan never raced a bike with this much
    grunt/speed

The fact is they are so fast they are getting axed to 800cc....

"not equalled Doohan's 5 consecutive 500cc/motogp world championships
    yet"

With 120 point lead its only a few races to go and he will equal five
straight [in HALF seasons of dohhan] on top of 125cc and 250cc
championships together with more points and victories in a single year
[going out on a limb that he will do that this season]

Ohhh did i mention he is doing on a inferior bike against a army?

And if doohan was on the modern bike he would have killed the lot of them.
    IMHO.

Most people were ready to crown Doohan at the halfway mark of the 1992 season
    too.
That's not a very good comparison because the number of races each season
varies and during the Rossi era there are more races each year than during
Doohan's era. Maybe a better measure would be the number of races they didn't
win in a year. Rossi's best effort yet (5) isn't really close to Doohan's
best (3). Rossi must win 6 out of the remaining 7 races to match Doohan or
win all 7 to better him.
If the bike has won 8/10 races this year I fail to see how it could be
regarded as inferior to those behind it. Using that logic the Ducati with 1
win from 42 races would have to be the most superior bike in the field as it
seems to consistently measure the fastest speeds.

    Or so tame and predictable!
Rossi never even experienced the full-on witches-brew, no-weight-limit
500s; only the neutered big-bang 135kg, unleaded-fuel, everyone can ride
them lowest-common-denominator bikes that were introduced to make the
    racing look more exciting!

Why do you think the bike's inferior? It's beaten all others almost ecvery
    race!
Even Edwards can easily beat riders with 10 times his experience with it!
    What's "inferior" about it?

Strangely, those "neutered big-bang 135kg, unleaded-fuel, everyone can ride
them lowest-common-denominator bikes" ran faster lap times than the "full-on
    witches-brew, no-weight-limit 500s".

I say bring back the Kawasaki and Suzuki two stroke 750 triples.

And the 990s (which are even easier to ride) are faster still!
It's amazing what you can achieve when both of your wheels are pointing in
the same direction; ... Ain't progress (and electronic management
    systems) grand?!

But as far as lap-times go; eventually they might have dropped (probably
largely due to track resurfacing and better tyres) but I recall a lot of old
    early/mid 90's lap-records standing for 5 or more years!
"The 500 lap times are stagnating" was even one of the reasons for ushering
    in the 990cc bikes!

....that and the 250cc bikes were getting just as fast as the 500s. I remember
one race in the mid 90s where qualifying times for the 250s would have the
poll sitter on about the 2nd row of the 500cc grid.

I believe one of the commentators (Ch 10, so probably rubbish then)
mentioned that the old Sachsenring circuit had 250s running faster than
    500s several years ago.

I don't know that they ever got faster (in similar weather conditions) but
they certainly got very close (at Donington especially).
