I don't know either, but it was terrible.

Darsy suggested that maybe the acclerant and the charcoal had dried
    out.

It was very odd - it lit, and appeared to be doing the getting white
and crumbly thing, but the heat output was abysmal. It was just about
good for defrosting the burgers before putting them on the other BBQ.

I was quite pleased with the fact that no-one who ate the stuff I'd
"cooked" got food poisoning. Then again, alcohol kills germs.

This is the thing with modern charcoal. Its formulation has changed so much
in line with current emission regulations and restrictions, it goes off very
quickly. Back in the last century, we had proper charcoal, that would burn
till dawn and give you cancer so fast it would make your head spin.

Thus spake platypus unto the assembled multitudes:
I can vouch for that. My next-door neighbour held a barbie one evening, and
next morning chucked the ashes into his (plastic) wheelie-bin before he
left for work. Next thing I knew, the bin contents were alight and the bin
melting fast. Couple of buckets of water from me doused the flames, but
the bin had to be replaced.
