Fair enough. If you look at the way the threads to which I contribute/have
contributed have gone since my return a few months ago, you'll note that
the 'degeneration' of the thread into a flamefest comes because someone
posts some provocative gobshite to which I (mea culpa) respond...

Some of this is my fault, granted, but I'll be fucked if I'm taking all the
blame..

way-back-when where he lashed a dummy to the seat of the bike, and
controlled the outfit from the (enclosed) sidecar, so as to get home nice
and dry? One of the funniest Ogris ever, IMHO, especially as it involved
police who attempted to arrest the 'rider'...

 

I've been on Usenet for a long time, and other than on AADP (which with the
notable exception of yours truly and a select few others, is populated by
psychopaths anyway), this is the first time that I've seen people who have
been unable to tell real life from 'cyberspace'.

I've met a couple of AADP people in real life, and with many of those
posters, the atmosphere on AADP can get very caustic, to the extent that as
I've advised in the past, the 'children' on UKRM who fondly imagine that
their 'flames' bother anyone, not to venture on there, 'cos they'll be
ripped to shreds. Yet when I've met the people concerned (except for one
pensioner who is so devoid of anything _resembling_ a sense of humour, that
he carries 'grudges' on AADP, over into real life), it's been a handshake
and a beer, and a laugh.

You know, in my previous posts concerning this, I've done my 'mea culpa'
and all that, but on reflection, I really do think that people on UKRM need
to wake up and smell the coffee, as the expression goes. This is _not_
real life! Des is _not_ a twat in real life (well, less of one, at least)!
There is _no_ need to threaten to hit _anyone_, for what they've written in
this (<fx: looks around>) medium.

What exactly is "Cyberspace" to you then.

See, I just regard usenet as a text based medium, which to all intents
and purposes is just like hitting "send to all" on an email.

Cyberspace to me seems like a stupidly wooly concept for people who want
to pretend the internet is a place, rather than just a jumble of wires
and electronic gubbins, linking millions of computers.

 

You still haven't grasped one essential point - it's still
communication. And more than that - it's the only way most people on
UKRM will every know anything of you. And (human beings being what they
are) when they read you being an arse they will naturally jump to the
conclusion that you are in fact, an arse.

Has anyone threated to hit you? From what I've seen it's just the
opposite.. The only one who seems to think you will get hit is you.

Well with 'reply to all', you're more or less sure who's going to read you,
whereas with Usenet, you're not. I created a tongue-in-cheek 'poll' [1] to
take the piss out of someone on AADP, and the striking thing was that
whilst quite a few of the regulars responded, so did a dozen or so people
whose names I'd _never_ seen mentioned on AADP. There is undoubtedly the
same percentage of lurkers on UKRM. And I'm supposed to 'watch my tongue'
because some folk whom I've never met, whom I've never heard of and whom I
in all probability will never meet, might get pissed ?

Come on ..

To extend the 'flight simulator' metaphor that I used yesterday, I find
that getting miffed about the words on a Usenet forum, is every bit as
fucked in the head as stalking an author who writes a novel, 'cos you
didn't like the actions of one of the characters in that novel.

But as I now realise, my opinion is no doubt in a minority here...

No. I've never owned a 5 year old bike before, and have never had
problems with batteries in cars I've owned 5 years.

 

And so we come to the nitty-gritty. _I_ am not responsible for the sad

This battery big, has big life, this battery small, life not so big.

Five years is the rough rule of thumb lifespan for a medium sized car
battery. Bikes are proportionally less.

Having said that I've had over 6 out of a secondhand Guzzi battery, now
at 4 years on a 6v MZ one and "this battery has Swedish writing on it" on
a 15 year old SAAB.

It really depends on usage and maintenance.

Lurkers are fucking weird, one step down from stalkers. It's just a nice
way of saying "ASCII voyeur". It's like having people turn up at a club
meeting and refuse to introduce themselves or talk to any of the
members, but happily sit there and eavesdrop on every single word.

Some of us only speak up when we have something worthwhile to say.

Riding the LE all the way from Zummerzet to Chimay was not on my agenda
and Chimay seems to be the only topic at the moment apart from ocasional
worship of japcrap.
